I wish there was a setting to tell planes that using guns while you have a missile is banned because it’s not blinking WW2 for crying out loud

Yeah, fussy air combat. No weapons free definitely. I rely on targeting 30+ miles out and dump 16; all 4 missiles at once from all 4 planes in a group. Make sure nothing allied is in front of you. Then run away at mach 2. I can only get cobras to use guns on other helos by attacking AS I come into a hover near the enemy. Hope they fix some of this

I've not had that much myself! I don't let F-14's go weapons free, I have them work in pairs with one Tomcat firing one missile, then a few seconds later having their wingman fire at the same target. It is very micro intensive, and frankly a pain, but it works.

Fun schenario. As an aside. When using AIM-54s to shoot up a missile storm, is there some trick to keep many of the missiles from looping back to target your own planes? They are stunningly good at killing my tomcats even when they maneuver abruptly which is also implausible

Yes. Your job is to keep an eye on them. There is a trigger to turn them hostile if you start shooting at them (though that may be non functional depending on the whims of the game)
