Another easy way of making a charcoal is making a small hole in the barrel (or a can, if you're really desperate) and fill it to the brim with wood, then light it on fire and some time later you'd get your charcoal.

It's able to be making in charcoal pit already. To produce charcoal you need to block access of oxygen to wood. This is the reason why you need pit and a lot of time.
