Its not balanced no but I think you have a great base here for something that could add more balance. I like the brain storm mechanic allot!

@z0ntir recipe list added to mod description.

I just uploaded a new version that fixes the UI crash in B42.4, and also adjusts the recipes to need a writing tool and notebook/notepad/paper/graph paper to create a schematic. Plus I finally got around to renaming "Cooking" to "Cookware" in the translation files.

If you're still having issues force steam to update the mod by closing Project Zomboid, unsubscribing, waiting a minute, then resubscribing.

I can replicate the problem, but despite being a very simple mod it's proving hard to find out why adding recipes to the game causes the code that lets a game controller use the crafting interface explode. I hope to have a fix soon!

i had the same problem as @eight

anyways the mod you made it makes you feel like an vanilla friendly survivor (in litteral vanilla you cant craft schemetics and only be found in survivor houses - but now you make shcemetic too)
Nepenthe  [author] 6 Mar @ 12:23am
@eight thanks - I have no idea how this mod is causing those problems, but I'll get to work on fixing it up.

This mod appears to be breaking the crafting screen in 42.4.x

It would be great if you could tell us which recipes the mod teaches
Rakensen 29 Jan @ 4:11pm
This is actually a really good idea

There's definitely a lot of scope to keep the core mechanic but change the details once crafting settles down, and make a mod that fits nicely into an already functional progression.

A third feature could be unlocking better uncommon/rare versions of an item after brainstorming. The item could be lighter/stronger/more durable than the standard version and really give opportunities to expand and make different runs unique.

Making the system contingent on having read a crafting professions skill books and using them in the brainstorming process would even give players a reason to hang onto those books and going out to find more. Different "versions" of the same skill level book could give different chances to brainstorm successfully or brainstorm different items.

Tbh, the whole "brainstorming" idea could add a fantastic level of depth as survivors in such a world would eventually figure out new ways to live in it instead of just relying on the ruins of the past.

Ngl, this could actually make for a useful mod even after B42.

It doesn't make sense that a person would become knowledgeable in a subject and NOT figure out something that is relatively simpler to understand (i.e. Michelangelo not knowing how to draw a stick figure because he didn't have a specific "how to draw stick figures" book growing up). In those cases, it would make sense that a person could figure out how to make something that had a lower crafting skill level to learn. This mod could be updated to reflect that by giving the player time to doodle out a solution.

You could also use this to brainstorm schematics from higher levels. As a player brainstorms, they could eventually land on a "crude" version of a higher level schematic that uses more materials/has less durability. Once the player reaches the appropriate level, further brainstorming could change that schematic to the normal one and you can continue.

cool

Useful schematics make sledgehammers and generator magazines feel common.
Shock Rampage 21 Jan @ 4:51am
Awesome, I didnt actually know that about the vanilla schematics as ive not found one yet! I look forward to trying this mod!
Nepenthe  [author] 20 Jan @ 3:27pm
@Shock Rampage Both of those can spawn as vanilla schematics, but 1) schematics are extremely rare - survivor house have the best loot rate and they are still very low 2) only blacksmith tool schematics can teach those items and 3) then you need to get luck and pick tongs or header tool out of a list of 36 possibilities.

When you make a schematic with this mod you can choose a blacksmithing tool schematic and each one will roll once on the tool schematics table, so you'll get tongs & header tool before too long.

Then you have the problem of needing tongs to make a header tool and needing a header tool to make tongs - I think there's a mod to fix that by allowing primitive tongs to me used to make the header tool, if not just use debug mod to spawn in the items... crafting progression has some known problems like that which should all be fixed next update.
Shock Rampage 20 Jan @ 8:47am
Does this include recipes that cant seem to be found in the world yet, such as metal tongs or the heading tool?
Nepenthe  [author] 19 Jan @ 2:25pm
@Josh I know the fix you mean, I just decided not to upload a fixed version yet it since people are already using it with the paperless recipe... I'll include that correction once we get the next B42 update.
JoshAwuh 19 Jan @ 11:25am
@Nepenthe, I fixed your mod!... In the DIYSchematicsRecipes.txt file you forgot the commas after the required items. I also added paper sheets to the required items possibilities. How can I get this text file to you?
ebrardandre 12 Jan @ 2:00am
Very smart mod thank you
Nepenthe  [author] 3 Jan @ 3:31am
@Yootah Once we have the full crafting system I'll see how this mod can be changed to fit that, and limiting DIY blueprints to things you can actually make is a good idea/option. For now I'm just using the vanilla function for generating schematics when found as loot, and since this mod' current form is temporary I don't want to spend too much time on it.
Yootah 3 Jan @ 2:00am
How about an option to limit discoverable schematics up to your current skill level(s)?
billyoneshot 1 Jan @ 6:06am
yes
ash_williams 1 Jan @ 5:16am
WOW! Dude you are awesome! It's rly cool idea that should to be in Vanilla! Over big thx to you!! Good bless and merry critsthmas!!!
Sleezy Cabbage 30 Dec, 2024 @ 4:54pm
Really cool way of doing this. Def better than cranking spawn rates or using the blanket sandbox setting.
Hy 29 Dec, 2024 @ 11:21pm
You are divine, simply marvelous.
tilarium 29 Dec, 2024 @ 4:04pm
I'm trying to take mods out, not add more mods. Dang it! Another awesome mod, Nepenthe!
