The gas giants are beyond horrendously ugly in vanillla..
Seriiously neon green and pink gas giants... lol
<FullsizeImageFilename>Environment/OrbTypes/Large/IceTundra</FullsizeImageFilename>
Where it should be:
<FullsizeImageFilename>Environment/OrbTypes/Fullsize/IceTundra</FullsizeImageFilename>
I've manually edited my OrbTypes.xml so we'll see how that goes.
@Skyguard, that would be a whole other mod.
The base game uses the file OrbTypes.xml to parse out all the images/stats for each planet. In the tundra planet record, they have a typo where it doesn't reference the right image. This is resulting in the game displaying my "landscape" image for both the planet data screen AND the ground battle screen. But it seems to be the only place where that is happening. (please let me know if I've missed a case where that is going on).
I put in a bug report to the DW2 team. But for now, Tundra planets will have a landscape picture in their ground battles. Boo!
Don't know if it's DLC related or just a mess-up on my part. Going to look into it.
The mod works with the new DLC...I just need to do some testing.
@Teranos -- I'm taking another look through the images...trying to get colors grouped together more (desert climate palettes vs oceans vs ice). I'll see about the moons. I might be bundled into moons/planets because of how vanilla handles types (for example, there's IceGlacial, IceTundra and FrozenIce in vanilla...those might show up as moons w/o atmo or planets w/ atmos).
Tricky sometimes :D
I like the rocky ice moon landscape, but it seems to me, that it is more suitable for the rocky metallic moon. I imagine Rocky ice moon as uneven surface, representing giant glaciers, with huge canyons, faults and cracks, somewhat reminiscent of the surface of "Europa" moon and all this against the backdrop of a black starry sky.
I would also tone down a bit or completely remove the sulphur volcanic atmosphere to make it more natural "Io" like moon (plus it's barely noticeable in the game)
Don't get me wrong, it's already turned out great! If you tell me how to do it myself, I would try)
I hope the devs will add more modding options, soon, and make them simple. So that everyone can easily customize the game for themselves.
First things, I'll swap out some pics as suggested and then take a look at renders soon-ish.
Let me try a few more subtle tweaks. But that might be one of those things that we're stuck with until the UI can be modded.
The DW2 team does "landscapes" weirdly. (in vanilla those are the pics that show actual landscapes...the ones that show up on the additional colony details screen. In vanilla, they just have one "forest_continental" pic that I think they use for forest, forest mangrove and continental. In order to not mess with the .xml files and make my mod conflict with others, I try and just swap out vanilla files and leave the rest alone. So...no, it's not intended, but it's how DW2 is w/o mods :D
I have a suggestion for the color of the grasses of a continental planet's landscape. Maybe try changing the grass color to green so it doesn't look like a mountainous area of savana planet?
I noticed that continental landscape is also used to display additional detailed information about forest and mangrove forest planets. Is this how it was intended?
Also the ground invasion maps are quite dark (IMHO). Maybe it makes sense to make them a little lighter?
Thank you for your mods, they definitely make the game more enjoyable to play!

@teranos -- yes I can take a look at that and remove some of the atmospheres in the landscape images.
