This man wasn't actually a warlord IRL. He was a military instructor in the armed forces of the DRC when it was invaded by Rwanda. The invasion consisted of ethnic militias who were seeking to take control of regions in the DRC to loot valuable conflict minerals (and possibly enact some ethnic cleansing along the way). This man stayed at his post to defend his country while the rest of the troops deserted. He is likely dead at this point, but remains a hero and a patriot of his country, one of the poorest in the world.

I'd like to think he would appreciate being immortalised in internet meme culture but we will probably never know. Nevertheless, we could all aspire to his bravery and valour.
