Yeah, modding DF can be pretty easy. A lot of it is simple data creation or editing, and if you want to get more complex there's Lua modding through DFHack. The DF wiki has several pages on modding, and the Kitfox Discord has two channels dedicated to DF modding discussion that are very active.

Hey Droseran. I wanted to say thank you for making all these mods, they work great and I've been having a blast. I'd love to be able add even more stuff that I think would be cool. Is modding DF something I could do myself?
