Headcrabs are more adapted for latching onto humanoid species like vortigaunts (despite it never being seen, it's probably not that wild to think it sometimes happens) and humans.

I don't think that headcrab can actually laych on something without a neck + 1 Houndeye's sonic attack and headcrab is dead.
