Yes, as you correctly pointed out, the high-poly model is made in order to bake maps like normals, ambient occlusion, curvature, etc. These maps are essential for texturing the model later — that's how you can create the albedo/base color/diffuse map (which are essentially the same thing).

Also what does the high poly have to do with the box? Is it just a way to generate the normal maps and diffusion?
