I was confused because I couldn't get the bunny pet to show even though I had the item.

not really, you can get collectors edition pet by editing reg files, there are a lot of guides on youtube all of which are very simple and short, its a cute and free pet in the beginning of your playthrough so you should give it a try

Does it require one to have the collector's edition of the game for the bunny pet to appear once equipped?
