In answer to the questions :

The shape of the Mastodon gradually took form as I built submarines, and was not specifically inspired by the Ulysses.

The oxygen stations are not connected because there is already an oxygen generator to recharge the tanks. You can always do this yourself. The Mastodon I is designed to be simple.
