can you make a never-extinguishing campfire mod?
ScientistUndyne 27 Jan, 2019 @ 10:24am
i think its OP it can be nerfed

Do you think its possible to make it to work indefinetly? Like if you want to light an area for a youtube video and having a few of these just looking awesome (and not wasting fuel)

Oh and I don't mind if you want to make your own version of the mod, particularly since this one was something I kind of threw together.

Yeah, you're right in that it's better for compatibility to just overwrite certain methods rather than the entire file, but I'm not an expert on Lua. I'll check out your mod later to see how you implemented it, but I can't promise I can get my mod to work that way. At least since this mod only touches one file the risk of a conflict with another mod is fairly low.

As for the lack of updates, I mostly just made this mod as an exercise. At current, the Nightlight is still kind of weak in DST, since Nightmare Fuel is so hard to get. I do like the idea of making the fuel more efficient, though I think the way I'd go about this is to have the light simply turn off and stop burning fuel except during the night, similar to the Pumpkin Lantern.

ok good and i thought you were long gone, because this mod wasn't updated once :)

I reviewed your code and i didn't like the way you are overwriting standard.lua files, because this will break sooner or later especially in heavily modded environments like on my server ^^.

Also i wanted nightlights to be able to carry more fuel and/or being more fuel efficient but on the other hand your mod does also reasonable improvements and, because i didn't expect you to answer here, i made a fork for my server and here is the result:

I hope you don't feel offended because i used the same pictures.

Maybe we should also merge those together now, what do you think?

Yes, I'm still here. I've tested it under the latest update and it still seems to be working fine, but please let me know if you've found any problems.
ChaosMind42 6 May, 2015 @ 4:40am
are you still here supporting this mod?

This doesn't sound overpowered even though i haven't tested it yet. Food for thought though, i have never EVER made one of this wasteful things.

Now for my first time, i will actually try to make one.

Mods not op as i see it. Its a great source of light that i find to be a niche. Even so I think this mod could turn supper with a little tweaking... It would be "imo" that if the Nightlight could be over charged to increase light raidance and duration by 10 for an extra 30 seconds of light. It would become my primary light source once i had it.

I actually don't think it's really overpowered, it's just that people aren't used to the notion that it might be a useful thing to build. Compare the amount of value you get out of any other structure in the game versus how much it costs to build it. The Crock Pot makes your food worth much more for a bit of stone and some charcoal. The Bird Cage lets you transform meat items into eggs for some reeds and some gold. The Pig House spawns a reusable friend for some pig skin and wood, etc. All of these items provide pretty massive benefit, arguably much more so than just being able to see a little farther, which you could already do by just building several campfires or a Miner Hat.

If this mod is so powerful that it causes you to seriously consider building the Night Light at some point, it's done its job. I still think it's kind of debatable whether you should spend 8 gold and a red gem for it. I'd certainly spend the first red gem on a Fire Staff instead.

This is a bit overpowered. I agree the basic one is a waste of time to build, but this things light radius is huge and there is no sanity drain. I would say that at maximum fuel level the light radius should only be just a bit larger than a fire pit.
Terotrous  [author] 1 Jan, 2015 @ 2:02pm
As an addendum, I tried adding in the option to re-enable the sanity aura, and I found out that the sanity drain on the Nightlight is actually broken, even in the base game. It's supposed to activate when you're within 50% of the radius of the light, but it doesn't, it only ever activates when you're right next to the Nightlight (try this yourself with the mod turned off and see). I tried rewriting that method to fix it, but it doesn't solve the problem, I think the issue lies in the way Sanity Auras themselves are coded.

At any rate, even if you somehow get close enough to be affected, the sanity drain on the nightlight is extremely small anyway. Even if it worked properly it wouldn't change all that much.
Terotrous  [author] 1 Jan, 2015 @ 12:50pm
I could probably put in the option for it, but the sanity drain would be almost unavoidable with this mod because it's calculated based on the light radius of the nightlight (sanity drains if your distance from the night light is less than the nightlight's light radius over 2). That was the main reason I disabled it.

Can you add a config option on the sanity drain. I feel the large radius is only balanced with the sanity drain.
