...Or you could have just decompiled the model, altered the $cdmaterials in the .qc, changed the material it uses, and then recompiled it?

- decompile the model, edit the qc file, change "cdmaterials" "(something with c_smg)" to "cdmaterials" "models/fruitshopfiend/fsf", open the reference (or bodygroup 'body') .smd file in your 3d program of choice (blender with source tools can open .smd) and change the material name to "fruitshopfiend_texture". Recompile the model.

- Create a new text file. Content:
VertexLitGeneric
{
"$basetexture" "models/fruitshopfiend/fsf/fruitshopfiend_texture"
}

- Save it as "models/fruitshopfiend/fsf/fruitshopfiend_texture.vmt".

- Done.

Took less than five minutes using Blender, Notepad++ and Crowbar (Source model (de)compiler).

When you upload the model SFM will automatically upload the texture and material together with the model.
