@killer_klown94 You're just missing a brain cell. The mod still works.
killer_klown94 6 May, 2024 @ 4:04pm
your a piece of shit and your mod dont work
Prince of Danes 18 Apr, 2021 @ 10:42am
Very realistic to pay extra for horses.
Skidvar  [author] 18 Apr, 2021 @ 3:31am
Ok. Keep in mind that when you redeploy your general and you change the bodyguard, you will have to pay for it again, which is not the case if you keep the same type. You will have a complete unit, though, which is not always the case otherwise as you can see in the picture.

Not sure anymore if you can choose (without extra payment) when you deploy your general for the first time.
Prince of Danes 18 Apr, 2021 @ 3:01am
Nice work, will try it out! Thank you for your message!
Skidvar  [author] 17 Apr, 2021 @ 11:33pm
The mod still works, just installed the game and checked it in the grand campaign with the Alamans.

You just need to use the "replace general option" (the kicking boot - left lower corner in the general details) or raise a completely new army. Both options are still possible.

This feature was not in the original game, it was a remnant of Rome II, just something that I tried out.
Prince of Danes 17 Apr, 2021 @ 2:50pm
I think it won't work anymore since new updates. This is sad, because my general is dying all the time when fighting against Huns (sniped by horse archers). I could avoid this by giving the guy a mount, but the game does not allow this logical move. Very stupid gamedesign, very flawed. Worst TW ever.
Skidvar  [author] 17 Apr, 2021 @ 11:11am
Only works when you raise a new army. So you have to send your general home first or replace him. Haven't checked this game and mod in a long time, so maybe it doesn't work anymore because of some update, although I doubt that...
Prince of Danes 15 Apr, 2021 @ 8:23am
How do I select a cavalry unit as the bodyguard of my general? My Danish generals are sitting ducks for atilla, while the rest of the army is on horses...
Dunadd 12 Oct, 2018 @ 10:08am
ah ok thanks
Skidvar  [author] 11 Oct, 2018 @ 11:21pm
No, tha would be startpos stuff... but you can change bodyguards from your own faction by replacing/disbanding them, and assigning them to an army again afterwards.
Dunadd 10 Oct, 2018 @ 6:48pm
Thanks for making this. Is there any version of this mod that makes starting generals' bodyguards mounted as well?
olivier.amiet 31 Jul, 2018 @ 7:55am
work OK and good MOD, thx...
Skidvar  [author] 13 Apr, 2018 @ 2:11am
No, there isn't as far as I know.
Kyle Katarn 13 Apr, 2018 @ 2:01am
ill check on that! and btw is there any way to create a better screen to choose from different unit types as bodyguards? pretty annoying as it is :-( i hope you dont mind me asking you so many questions :D thank you
Skidvar  [author] 13 Apr, 2018 @ 1:53am
Well, you must have done something wrong... Probably taken the wrong skin type... Been a while since I worked with it, but I believe you need a cinematic type... Also make sure that he doesn't change appearance because of multiple hairtypes etc. ;)
Kyle Katarn 12 Apr, 2018 @ 9:50pm
Hey skidvar so i managed to edit the various meshes and got the appearance i was looking for but now my high king has no animations on the campaignmap... it just stands there in a static position :-( what did i miss here? could you help?
Skidvar  [author] 11 Apr, 2018 @ 11:19pm
It's quite difficult... Especially because you have the 2D and 3D variant.... You need the variant editor for it. 3D for the campaign & battle maps, 2D for unit cards if you want to do it well...
Kyle Katarn 11 Apr, 2018 @ 5:43pm
i again have a question :D how could i manage to change the appearance of the king/general? looks weird if the general still looks like from the vanilla game... thx in advance!
Kyle Katarn 8 Apr, 2018 @ 7:20pm
Alot! Thanks for your time!
Skidvar  [author] 8 Apr, 2018 @ 2:32pm
Of, course, it is up to you if you only use this feature for your king, if you want your other generals to use the standard bodyguard... But If you make this option available for the AI, the other factions won't think the same way, of course, so be vareful with that. I assume this unit you speak of is already available to your faction in the mod that you use, so it should work just fine if you make a pack with just the table called commander_unit_permissions, add the unit there, and link it to your faction. A bit more mod-friendly version would be the same file in a pack, but renamed (with a prefix, e.g. mod_commander_unit_permissions), and delete all the rows and just add a single row with the unit and faction... A renamed table is just an addition to the vanilla table, so the game will read the vanilla table + your table + the table from any other mod with a renamed table. Hope this helps - cheerS
Kyle Katarn 8 Apr, 2018 @ 9:26am
Hi there! quick question... can you edit the kings unit as well? which files do i need to change in PFM? my plan is to equip my king in charlemagne with the knights of the silver swan unit from LOTR pack... :D
Skidvar  [author] 19 Mar, 2018 @ 8:57am
Not that I know.
ReFleXzZ 19 Mar, 2018 @ 4:10am
Is there a possibility to make a scrollbar for the unit selection menu if more units than two are added?
ReFleXzZ 14 Feb, 2018 @ 4:34pm
Would you make it work for the new factions from the mod "Total War - Imperium"? :3 and i want to say thank you for your mods, they are very very good! :D
Xeryx 26 Nov, 2017 @ 12:58pm
do we need your UI mod? to make it work correctly?
Xeryx 26 Nov, 2017 @ 12:57pm
I think what he is saying is when the general gets killed, and you select a new general. The cavalry selection ends up behind (background) the generals and you cannot select the appropriate unit because you can use the mouse to select it. It should be in the foreground.
Skidvar  [author] 3 Oct, 2017 @ 10:34am
It should work, the unit selection. XAI Tharbbg is a modified version of another of my mods, should be good! ;) Maybe you can use my UI mod, that makes it a bit clearer. Just watch out that you take the right one!
davewolf 3 Oct, 2017 @ 9:45am
Great mod! Although is there a way to make this work when a general gets killed and the general selection conceals the unit selection? (BTW, I'm using this as part of XAI THARBBG Module.)
FriskyCheeks 29 Jun, 2017 @ 5:40pm
thank you for making this mod, this is how the game should of been made....
Skidvar  [author] 26 May, 2017 @ 3:51am
Slavic bodyguard added and adjusted upkeep cost to 90% of the standard costs.
Skidvar  [author] 21 Jan, 2017 @ 9:57am
I don't think I found an appropriate cavalry unit. Do you have any suggestion?
Jakoporeeno 21 Jan, 2017 @ 3:53am
Does this work for the new slav factions? Now when I choose to raise an army I don't get the option to choose cavalry units. It worked when I tried with the Saxons
Skidvar  [author] 25 Dec, 2016 @ 4:29pm
Subscribing is for the steam version. The mod gets downloaded when you start the game and you have to tick the mod in the launcher. I'm afraid that the other versions, the non-steam links) are outdated.
Atlacie 25 Dec, 2016 @ 3:26pm
I wanted to try this out but I can not get the download, it says subscribe to download, well I subscribed and I don't see how that makes me able to download now.

I tried the two links but seems that the links within those link to download it are no longer good.

Thanks for any help, I think this would be a useful mod.
Wh!teB3ard 26 Feb, 2016 @ 12:56pm
would this mod be updated to the latest version?
Arkansas 8 Feb, 2016 @ 2:32pm
Okay, for further reference, this is why I usually leave the modding to the folks who know what they're doing: because I do not. Apparently, my general's bodyguard doesn't have a general. Or bodyguards. Just horses. Whoops.
Arkansas 7 Feb, 2016 @ 7:18pm
I've used this mod in the past with the Saxons, and I know it worked then, but in switching from my laptop to my desktop, this mod no longer works. Looking at the file in PFM, I don't see any entry for Saxons in the unit_variants_tables, or the units_to_groupings_military_permissions_tables. Something tells me that strange things are afoot.
Fenrir Gaming 4 Feb, 2016 @ 2:15pm
@Skidvar How do I do that?
Mazdek 4 Feb, 2016 @ 10:36am
They do, but only as a linear progression. The king starts with the camels but all other new generals are the Ras Guard tier 2 spearman, which is upgraded by tech to the Desert Chieftain tier 1 camel heavy melee cavalry (which upgrades to Desert Warlords later.) Frankly the Ras Guard is a better unit than the Desert Chieftain, save for speed and charge bonus of course. So for a defending force or the infantry side of a soldier/cavalry pair of armies, you'd want to stay with the Ras Guard.
Having the option to go melee vs cavalry would be nicer, but I guess that means a higher tier spear unit would have to be added? I haven't gotten to play the Beher's Chosen or Kushute Shotelai yet, or the two spear units you get later on based on your religion (but I bet that would be difficult to check for) but I'm sure one of them could be used.
Skidvar  [author] 4 Feb, 2016 @ 9:52am
@ Brennus Tigeir: The thing is I'm limited to 2 units, otherwise we have trouble with the UI. I chose for cavalry as it is the most obvious for a leader (i.e. mobility). It's always possible to change this, but that wasn't my intention. You can easily make changes yourself with PFM. It only requires adding the unit you wish to the list in commander_units_permission_tables. I only made this mod more elaborate as I wanted to add the units to the existing ones, with new names etc. for mod compatibility. So you can use this mod with any other mod that makes unit changes.
@ Mazdek: I thought all of them already had cavalry general units, don't they?
Mazdek 4 Feb, 2016 @ 2:43am
If you feel like expanding this mod again, the Desert Kingdoms factions could use this sorta thing too. :)
Fenrir Gaming 23 Jan, 2016 @ 5:30pm
Can you do a mod that allows later units to be used as Generals? What really bites is that the highest tier General that can be used is the Royal Archer for Caledonians.
Skidvar  [author] 19 Jan, 2016 @ 7:20pm
@SHAMEFUR DISPRAY!: You can upgrade, no problem. Just not the one that I have added, so you will have 2 cav options in most cases.
@erykolos [PL]: nope, I don't know how to juggle with UI. That's why with this mod you will not have more than 2 bodyguard options. Maybe one day I will know how to add a sliding bar or replace UI parts, but not yet.
OZA 15 Jan, 2016 @ 10:33am
So you're saying if we use this mod we can't upgrade our general's bodyguard units later down the line in the tech tree like we can with vanilla game?
erykolos [PL] 6 Jan, 2016 @ 6:08am
can you make that mod in a horizontal line rather than vertical becouse if someone (like me) have mods that add new general units they not fit ?
WWSRD 23 Dec, 2015 @ 6:09pm
wow thanks man, such quick turn around, you made my night! Cavalry generals were the only thing missing from my campaign I thought and I still was forever away in upgrading so thanks a bunch
Skidvar  [author] 23 Dec, 2015 @ 4:03pm
Fixed it... So, save, exit and load your game again... Suebi used to be part of the core_units military grouping, now they have their own roster. I also changed the recruitment/upkeep costs for the general horse units to 400. It used to be 600, which is quite a lot early in the game.
Skidvar  [author] 23 Dec, 2015 @ 3:43pm
No, you are right. Forgot to update this pack. I'll fix it. Should be save-compatible.
