Yep, bro. Real cities in Guangxi are just built by finding a tiny piece of land among hills :lunar2020ratinablanket:

:winter2019joyfultearssnowman: yep that was part of the idea.

This is going to be hell to build a city in, and I can't wait.

I mean, I don't have an artistic talent so I always make things (terrains, etc.) unrealistic...
MrMiyagi  [author] 21 Jan @ 11:51am
You should do it! Cities 1 is an awesome game for map making because with custom assets on the workshop, you can create some amazing looking maps that are totally unique. It really came a long way since the time this map was made (this is also only vanilla, no custom workshop stuff).

I sometimes have a desire to take up making a map (this happened many times in many games) but I never have an artistic talent. 😂

Well the other problem in this map is that my terraces are as wide and as tall as 3 houses :winter2019joyfultearssnowman:

I got into making more realistic maps a little after this. In fact, today I make real locations, and put in a lot of effort like driving around on Google Street View to make sure it looks the same.

I removed other maps that were crazier than this one. I think the main point was that nothing like this existed in the workshop, and people appreciated it.

OK, in simple words, terraces and sharp hills hardly co-exist, because you can't build terraces on such steep slopes. Normally farmland in this terrain is located on plains among hills

It was my third map ever

Thank goodness someone is still making vanilla maps. My poor machine cannot handle all the extras some maps require. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Update December 2016! Improved quality and improved roads and additional rail. New rail is hidden via tunnel. Very difficult terrain which is why there was only one rail originall.

Cool SevenS7ar! I hope I captured the spirit of the real location. I'd give my first born to be able to see Guilin and the Li River

This is so awesome! I was in Guilin city earlier this year for 4 weeks. I loved it!

Turned it into an overcrowded, highly polouted mega city and refused to let people leave. Just like modern china!

By the way, if you look closely, you'll see something found in no heightmap: a river dragon. The windiest part of the river is his tail, his arms surround the temple mountain and is clawing some mountains, and his head has a lttle island as his eye. Open the map in map editor and you can see him best.
So my maps go from altered heightmaps like in Smoky Mountains, to this and Emerald Coast which are done like paintings, drawn in game from a human veiwpoint as perspective. I still use this "painting" technique in all maps to make sure it looks good, which causes some big changes in elevation even in Smoky Mountains. This technique is also how I figure out where to put sunlight paint in maps like Emerald Coast.
Well that was really long lol...

Hi Arty! As I'm going along, it seems each of my maps has a different process. This one was before I knew Wilbur. I tried importing heightmaps of Halong Bay Vietnam and Guilin China... they just looked awful. I really wanted to do this type of landscape, so I had to do this one by hand. I even ended up going over the map completely twice, and the rice paddies were sheer torture :D I used photograps and videos of the land around Guilin. I then went in-game, zoomed down and looked around from a perspective as if I were standing there. I raised and lowered mountains from a horizontal viewpoint. This is the same as Emerald Coast. Basically, I painted a landscape like I do on paper, except this is 3d of course. In the end, the actual elevations of sea level vs top elevation are completely exaggerated... almost bonkers, but looking from ingame into the horizon, it should look like a landscape painting or photograph.. well, admittedly an amateur one :D

I'd love to know your creative process for this map.

I'll be amazed if it's 100% the vanilla map editor!

Is it a serious edit of a real heightmap? An amalgamation of several? What software was your workhorse? Photoshop/gimp maybe? Or perhaps you used a terrain/heightmap editor like wilbur?

Thanks!

Thanks @Shroomblaze and @PajamaZ! Yes, that resource placement on the fields is such a cool idea... not my idea, though! I wonder if someone has invented a way to paint ground, because ordinarily those resource colours can be pretty ugly, depending on the map
Hi @Breeze! The photo of the beautiful Gwanghwamun is to show what it looks like in Dragon Bay. There's also another building and one of my parks. But you have a good idea, I will mention those just in case people want to know. Those two buildings are beautiful!!
Breeze 11 May, 2015 @ 2:44am
There is no link address Gwanghwamun mode. I do not others will be needed.

If you do not receive this mode you will not see Gwanghwamun.
PajamaZ 11 May, 2015 @ 2:16am
Had alot of fun with this map, I love the resource placement on the fields :D
