It's after you get the sphere. I like to show future parts of the chamber early on. I'll upload some screenshots.

By other side you mean where both buttons are? after we have run passed the turret?

It definitely is hooked up to the pedestal button on the other side of the laser fence that you see at the top of the stairs. Basically, it just shows you that later on, you'll disable the stairs. Usually buttons activate stairs rather than deactivate them, so I can understand confusion.

I don't think the stairs with the \ symbol is hooked up.
