The reason why this mod don't work is because it overwrites the entire WX-78 file, which means this mod create an entire new WX-78. It should specified here this about the mod so people know what they are dealing with when downloading this...
But I read it takes away the possibility to get upgrades... Is that fixed?
Btw, I think the chance is still too high. I would make it 1% or less. Gears are supposed to be scarce and getting one is supposed to be a hype. Maybe make an option which allows to choose how much percent? (damn, even half percent might be high yet, but that would make gear finding a little less of a trouble).
This kinda breaks WX-78. You can have stacks of gears before Winter, and gears should be treated as a rare resource.
I suggest toning down the drop rates a lot! As in, 0.5% for a Spider, AT THE VERY LEAST.
400 hp is too op.
Also mega speed after lighning and 100% chance makes him cheat charater.
I was going to make a mod where tumbleweed's contain random ridiculous things, but someone already beat me too it.
Yeah, I have a friend who does something similar. Our group tries to avoid letting him know we have gears when he plays WX because we know that he will try his best to eat all the gears in the world.
That kind of lead me to making this. That, and I just wanted to submit something random and simple that people might be interested in. I'm not even using this mod personally, to tell you the truth. But I've never even played WX (just watched others lol), so that might be the reason.
But yeah, when my friend play's WX, I usually tell him "GET YOUR GEARS FROM TUMBLEWEEDS!!" because I know if he finds some clockworks, he's going to eat every single one he gets, save maybe a couple.
Though, I always follow him around as I know for a fact he get's a little forgetful at times, and once he forgets something and dies, I'll be taking back those gears he ate :)
Hopefully caves and ruins would solve the WX problem, seeing as having multiple WX's on a server can immediately lead to a shortage of gears in the world, minus those from tumbleweed
Lol yeah, Wolfgang can turn into a food vaccuum with bad Wolfgangs. It can kind of be worse with WX though, since he could possibly take all the gears that could have gone to ice boxes/ice flings. A rare and semi-limited resource is at stake with WX.
And your ambitions for making WX feel less invasive are pretty noble, makes me excited to see what klei might do to improve the game. After all, once we get caves and ruins, WX will have alot more gears to work with.
But in terms of rejection, how do you think I as a wolfgang player feels? You might think that willow's get kicked, but imagine an entire server full of noob wolfgangs that don't manage their hunger, they are like food vacuums lol.
That much being said, I'm certain you balanced out the numbers so that the gears obtained from fighting is still minimalistic compared to it's drop rate from tumbleweeds, though I personally feel like I'd rather keep the playstyle of killing spiders for resources to just simply that. Which is why I wouldn't use the mod, but I can understand why other people would.
There is more to the game than just food, though. Surviving the hound waves, adjusting your playstyle to the season, gathering resources for fires and so on. So Wigfrid wouldn't be able live only off spiders, and neither would WX.
I agree that spiders can be easy to fight by dragging them out. But, assuming you can find 3 spider nests to farm daily and put time into killing them when you could be doing other things, I think that you would still only get 1 gear on average of 2-3 days. It's hard to find that to be a sustainable food source.
It's actually for a similar reason that I find wigfrid to be a boring character to play, because to play wigfrid in a bread and butter fashion, you essentially just setup a firepit next to spiders, then kill spiders forever. Since eating the monster meat is counteracted by her health/sanity gain on kill. And monster meat is always plentiful, since spider's will be harvested normally for their silk and glands anyway. While that isn't saying that wigfrid is a bad character by any means, just simply that when playing her you can bypass most strategies by just surviving off of spiders forever.
The thing about WX gears though, is gears restore all of his stats when he eats them, it's effectively non-expiring jerky. And obtaining jerky involves killing a creature that drops it, hanging it on a drying rack, then waiting till the jerky is available. Afterwards, it still expires in 20 days. WX could stockpile gears while relying on a normal jerky strategy, and then use the supply of gears when fighting anything as an effective quick heal (Since gears use the quick eat animation also).
I actually personally think Wolfgang with full hunger is still stronger, if you ignore his giant hunger gain and only compare combat-wise. He gains a 2x strength boost, which means that the fight will be 1/2 as long. Compare that to WX's ability to tank for 1/3 more than Wolfgang. Proportion-wise, Wolfgang wins, but I also believe that reducing fight duration is more important than tanking for reasons such as fighting the Deerclops in the cold, possibly at night.
On the food source point, running around killing 20 spiders for 1 gear isn't exactly a simple source of food. A lvl 1 nest has 3 spiders, lvl 2 has 6, lvl 3 has 9. So you need to find many nests. The risk of taking damage (especially yellow spiders) usually means that you need to expend hunger to regain hp. I would find Koalephants to be an easier to find and more plentiful food source than killing many spiders
It's just interesting to see what other players have to say about it.
Additionally, even if your not using gears to upgrade, gears also provide WX with effectively a powerful food source that NEVER EXPIRES. This is pretty crucial, as if gears become plentiful enough, he never needs food, which can sort of destroy the overall theme of "Don't Starve."
For WX there are currently 2 food types that do not expire, gears and tallbird eggs. As long as both resources are rare and replenish slowly thing's should effectively be fine. However should WX end up surviving the entire game entirely by eating gears, it could be problematic.
Additionally, causing WX to get struck by lightning by either random chance or through methods of forced lightning (Such as the teleport staff) causes him to restore his health.
Basically, he's built to be a character you play for the long term, hunting the gears is what wx players usually intend to strive for. It's a luxury and it means your going to be in the desert for a long time, but it's no different than a wolfgang player getting a steady supply of food that doesn't spoil too quickly.
This mod is meant to alleviate that problem a little without upsetting the balance of gears in general, such as adding in the ability to craft gears, which changes gears for everyone rather than only WX.
Sure, you can sit in the desert for about 20-30 days as WX, hunting tumbleweeds. But that may be boring to some people, which is why I thought that combat as WX would make a nice alternative
That much being said, I feel like some enlightenment could help some players coming across this mod trying to alleviate the gear problem.
Unless your using mod's that require a steady supply of gears, gears rarity contributes alot to the luxuries the game offers. You usually only need a max of 3 gears to get your base fully up and running, 1 icebox and 1 flingomatic. And even without an icebox or flingomatic, you can survive the entire game year, these just make things alot easier.
If the need for extra gears is heavily desired (Whether your WX or using a mod that needs alot more gears like wallgates) it's recommended you find a desert and try to open as many tumbleweed's as you can. Gear's can be obtained through those.
