the sound was cute but stopped working after one use. now it only plays the normal M16 sound

If there is a high pitch sound then you should remove the item until you get it fixed.
There are guides on the Steam site for sounds. You may find some over at GameBanana also.

First thought that comes to mind is to make sure your custom sounds are just as long, if not longer, than the original game sounds. If you have to, add silence to the end to make it long enough.

For example, if the M16 firing sound clip is seven seconds long, add silence to yours until it's about eight seconds.
