Mobs dropping more things is the "essence" of value. While the common perception of a merchant is one that makes money by making a business of trading. You need to be a skillful buisness owner to finder hidden values by getting more out of your action. When you slay a turkey the whole thing is going to waste for 2 drumsticks to drop. Retrieving feathers from it as well is hardly "overpowered".
Lastly despite the game's title, most players die to all other elements more often than starving so getting more food related drop is hardly an issue.
2) I think, this character may earn more gold from pig king. He is a merchant. And, maybe, pigs will follow him longer.
