If I had it to do over I'd just put a landing gear sticking off the front of the cockpit. I've used the spin with dampers with ion thrusters before, the trouble is when spinning I usually end up having to do a twine ball spin to get all the vector.

The first time around, I had arrived with only about 2% hydrogen the first time and was using the fixed amount of thrust settings at 1 kN or so, overcorrected and ran out of hydrogen with enough speed that I figured the ship would drift to far and too fast for retrieval. With no way of generating or even transporting hydrogen I decided I'd go back and try again hoping that I'd have more hydrogen when i arrived.

While I was typing this I realized I should have just built an Oxy Generator on the small ship and mined some Ice. Many times unless I've thought something out before hand I tend to go for a more complicated solution first, then a simpler one.

I'm glad you had fun. It is possible to completely halt a vehicle with only one direction of thrust. Turn ON inertial dampening and spin around the opposite direction of movement. Use the asteroid, or a quickly built platform as a visual reference (am I stopped?). It's a useful skill to know.

I did find it through FunshineX's Let's Play Ep.12 and went ahead and watched it before playing.

It was fun I spent a good four hours that evening playing this world. I ended up flying up to the asteroid coordinates and then unable to connect to a connector on the minimal base, i built so the ship wouldn't drift off, ran out of hydrogen trying to align with the connector. so quit without saving and had to restart from the beginning so when i got to the asteroid coordinates I built five more hydrogen thrusters so I could attach to the connector then found i needed those parts for the assembler or the arc furnace so built a landing gear to attach the ship and ground down all but a few steel plates for the connector and hydro thrusters. After that I mined iron and then scouted for the ores i needed to build anything else, there is alway one ore it takes forever for me to find its adifferent ore for each map though. I'd call this an average difficulty.
