In comparison, the Kämpfer model has 18,621 polys and 41,391(?!) tris.
It's because of the design having a LOT of round, bending shapes and using boolean in 3ds max typically creates a ton of extremely small edges, which turn into even more tris.
The cutoff point for me where you have to divide the model into different .objs was around 15k polys iirc.
