In both of these pictures, I am no more than ten meters off the ground, looking across a relatively flat plain that rises into a minor peak some distance ahead. Now I like that the atmosphere seems dusty and the ground appears a little amorphic, but - especially when moving - the ultimate effect on me anyway is that the sandy surface, the brown-purple part, loses its forward dimension and appears as if the horizon could either be right in front of me or a couple tens of meters away. It is, in fact, closer to three hundred meters or so. Does that help any?
I'm not quite sure I follow you on the smooth dimensionless blob. Could you share some images to see what you're saying.
