One easiest way to limit an RTC is hide a scaled down armor plates between the pistons (on the moving block). Armor plates won't go through the pistons so the won't move too far.
But if you prefer not to scale things, put the pistons directly under/above the swivel joint

The Fokker DR.I actually had a machine-gun intterupter switch which made it so the machine-gun wouldn't blow the propeller off.
@Taco pwr phd Reducing the timescale directly increases the success of cannonballs not hitting the propeller.
