Realistic Skybox

it always bothered me that the default skybox was so bright and dull

if they wanted to do a brighter skybox, they shouldve at least given it some color.

in any case, great mod, thank you!
Gaz 24 Jan, 2021 @ 12:43pm
No error for me.
Wolverine 31 Dec, 2020 @ 6:28am
Throwing an error now
Lone Wolf 1 Nov, 2020 @ 12:55pm
This looks really nice. Especially like the darker nights. Lights actually have a purpose now.
Goatroach 25 Jun, 2020 @ 12:04am
People are always commenting on how spectacular my screenshots look, and some ask if I'm using an ENB or something. I'm like, "Nope." Then I link them this mod!
V_Metalic 7 Apr, 2020 @ 12:08pm
How dark the nights can be?
Avience 20 Dec, 2019 @ 1:14am
hi, anybody also has that the skybox has not been working since last update (19-12-2019)?
Goatroach 2 Sep, 2019 @ 3:23pm
Got back into SE again, fired up your mod, and was blown away by how good it makes the game look, especially with the new skins/materials DLC. Also helps to be running in 4K at last, lol!

(the drone is for atmo, but is launched from outside the planet gravity field)

Seriously, the lighting makes such a difference while zipping around!

"yea not realistic, thats what it looks like on the moon"
I hope you are sarcastic and not that stupid with this video and statement.
Goatroach 30 Aug, 2018 @ 1:12pm
@Grumpy, none of that video was on the moon. Realistic lighting in space is quite different as the contrast is so high. If you focus on the stars, lit objects (like a ship or surface of moon) would be blindingly bright. If one wants to focus on the objects, the sky looks void of stars due to how tight the aperature needs to be closed to restore detail to the lit objects, as the starlight is comparatively dim. A fun way to play with this concept is with Nvidia's lunar lander lighting demo. I get where you're coming from, though, as space is actually freaking spectacular looking with all the nebulas, stars, and Milkyway.

Would you mind if I use this in a machinima? You would be credited.
OSTRICH 9 Sep, 2017 @ 9:29am
Such a great mod! thx
Burstar 3 Sep, 2017 @ 7:05pm
Love it. Nighttime is too dark imo. Should be some light from stars at least. Otherwise 5 stars
hugopnabais 5 May, 2017 @ 2:40am
Please fix. It does not work on new versions. Sun disk is a full orange ball!
Cardboard Overlord 15 Jan, 2017 @ 11:25am
Finally! A skybox that looks like the sky.
TheMystic6 14 Aug, 2016 @ 4:26pm
Finally what i was looking for! i wanted something realistic.. but may i ask does this work with speed mods? i have 800/350
Shroom 21 Jul, 2016 @ 10:08am
@Joel yeah that was never an issue with this skybox when I was using it. However, I have not had it working at all lately, since I am not on the dev branch.
Mulder 18 Jul, 2016 @ 4:16pm
It might be something wrong with my game, but the darkest blacks seem to come toghether to form big ugly blobs or blackness. its both quite annoying and incredibly unrealistic
Shroom 12 Jul, 2016 @ 8:55am
I didn't get any error, it just showed the dev warning while loading into the game, and the mod just didn't load. I'll try it again tonight.
Elsephire  [author] 12 Jul, 2016 @ 1:25am
This work in my two server, one in the dev one in the stable. Shroom are you one error?
Shroom 11 Jul, 2016 @ 2:21pm
Can confirm this is not working on the stable branch on my dedicated.
Dirtysquiryl 11 Jul, 2016 @ 1:58pm
Stable version?
Elsephire  [author] 1 Jul, 2016 @ 3:06am
Is fixed, thx Phoenix for you report.
Gwindalmir  [developer] 30 Jun, 2016 @ 11:22pm
Just a heads up, it appears that this crashes dedicated servers on the DEV branch.
I know this probably doesn't have any code, but it's crashing in the game code. Probably some xml changes needed.

this is nice. :)

its a nice reminder of how painfully empty space can be. :D

What you think is stars is not stars at all until your in space

Can You See Stars in Space?

Is it true that in space a person is not able to see stars all around them like we do here on Earth?
No, I hear that in space the stars look wonderful, bright (although not twinkling) and very clear. What has probably caused some of this confusion is that in the typical photo or video image from space, there aren't any stars. This is because the stars are much dimmer than the astronaut, Moon, space station, or whatever the image is been taken of. It is extremely hard to get the exposure correct to show the stars. Luckily, the human eye handles the different light levels much better than a camera does.

This skybox makes sense if on a planet surface, or while on a lightly colored station on the sunny side of a moon, but otherwise it isn't realistic. You can see the rest of the galaxy once you leave the atmosphere, you just lose that view in photos when our cameras expose for the bright areas. This just isn't what astronauts see when in orbit or on the ISS.
Anach 21 May, 2016 @ 1:52pm
@BOT Wayne, that isn't true at all. You can see stars in space, but if a camera exposure is set to take a photo of an object, then it doesn't typically see stars, however, the naked eye does. If you need to verify, then there are hundreds of sources you can verify that with, including a NASA FAQ.
Breanox 21 May, 2016 @ 12:57pm
@mcarchitect01 ^^
mcarchitect01 21 May, 2016 @ 12:10pm
I've wanted something like this for a while. Thank you.
Eddy 21 May, 2016 @ 9:59am
we need star like planet that emits light and get rid of that fake sun.
silaslancashire 21 May, 2016 @ 5:55am
@BOT Wayne. That's not strictly true. It would be if you were on or around bright objects but just sitting in the dark soul crushing void of space would have quite a nice view. However we cannot just apply a skybox to do this. :(
Emrule 21 May, 2016 @ 4:20am
I really want someone just to make a plain black skybox.
That'd be REALISTIC.
as in.
the most realistic possible
because in space you cant see stars!
TRUE FACT!
<Insert name here> 21 May, 2016 @ 2:50am
realistic if playing in or near a city scape , nice to have a clean skybox tho can make it harder to spot dangers
Breanox 21 May, 2016 @ 1:29am
@Geneticus Hi, the image which serves to make the skybox has a resolution of 12 000*2 000.
The image is divided by 6 (6 faces of a cube).
Finally, a face has a resolution of 2 000*2 000.
TiGeR 20 May, 2016 @ 12:07pm
Hello
Finally SkyBox with perhaps an ideal climate cosmic void, dark and dangerous space, or too many, or too few lights. This mod is an amazing revelation to me good job :)
Ludwichs 20 May, 2016 @ 9:34am
@Geneticus It's probably a cylindrical projection.
Geneticus 20 May, 2016 @ 6:46am
What is the actual resolution? "12 000 x 2 000" doesn't make any sense as the skybox is a cube, so all sides should be equal.....
Anach 20 May, 2016 @ 4:44am
Correct, without light pollution, and in space, you would see a crazy amount of stars. It would be like star pollution. However, what the naked eye can see, compared to a camera is also different. This skybox is still a good balance.
NooK 20 May, 2016 @ 2:05am
He means without light pollution we would see much more vivid colors and many many more lights bright and dark.
gornyakmaniac 19 May, 2016 @ 11:23pm
"Donate" button is too small. You should make it x4 large, I think.
-Dawn-717- 19 May, 2016 @ 10:29pm
well the earth in this game has no human pop other than the player:steamhappy:
Hemza 18 May, 2016 @ 12:33pm
Change the name to Realistic: Light Pollution Skybox.
Hemza 18 May, 2016 @ 12:31pm
This is only realistic if you have light pollution, and 300 years of coal and oil burning pollution clogging up the sky.
Guardsman Miku 18 May, 2016 @ 9:16am
@Plok
there is also the fact that that photo was taken with a rather high exposure. In real life the milky way wouln't be that bright, and you also have to worry about light polution from the sun and refelcted off planets
Elsephire  [author] 18 May, 2016 @ 7:18am
We plan a mod allowing to add celestial bodies 3d animated, it will agree with you certainly better.
GrumpyPlok616 18 May, 2016 @ 3:50am
If it where not for light pollution you would be able to see the milky way from earth

As long as your looking in the right direction

I wish to God light pollution was not a thing, I love space

I hope I see first contact
