I actually heard of Magicka a few months after making the model.

As for the sword stuck in stone idea, I recall seeing it in Shadow Hearts: From the New World. Though, said sword had a katana hilt stuck onto its hilt. Yeah, sword in stone + redundant handle.

Character who does that isn't exactly the brightest bulb.

I recall something like this from an animated series I saw as a kid, an episode of Timon and Pumba where they couldn't remove the sword so they brought the sword and the rock with them and the man they brought it to used it was a weapon in a similar fashion.
