I've used this in my current city as the default for the rural areas. I personally think the radius is perfect. The game isn't naturally geared towards spread out, low density rural areas. At least in rural America, one small fire station can likely be required to cover 100 square miles or more. Virtually nobody lives in those hundreds of square miles because buildings are so spread out. So I think the large radius combined with only two fire trucks is a pretty solid compromise.
