I have ~30 Stellaris mods. Few people bother with compatibility tests with random mods, but with that many the time requirement... so I don't know. I'll take your word for it and update the warning. Thanks.

Already got a custom planet working in the last month. The skin needs a bit of work on this one compared to my other Coruscant but otherwise fine.

You could set the planet type to pc_ai. Your empire will have your starting home world pref (like arid) but count the AI planet as their homeworld. You will not be able to colonize other ai planets

No, unfortunately.
I did try I while back with the original mod; even if I got it to work on other planets it would need serious extra stuff in areas I don't have experience with because you'd have to select it at the start, and that would add a lot of room for conflict with every other mods. Not what you want for a starting system mod.
There is a mod which does add city planets, but it does not, I think, offer them as a starting option. Instead they are something you can terraform to.

The original Coruscant mod has also been updated with some custom tileblockers and a unique Jedi Temple building, so check it out :)
