From what I hear, a number of Gen II Pokemon were intended for Gen I but time and cartridge space prevented it. Consequently, Missingno is one of those intended Pokemon, now with blank data which results in it being called "Missingno" since it lacks a Pokedex number.

Well, it is a glitch, since as a placeholder, it should never be accessable. However, a glitch enables the player to obtain the placeholder Pkmn, which causes the game to become messed up. I've been considering trying to catch a MissingNo. once I've finished my PkmnRed game, and transferred my pokemon to a copy of Crystal.

MissingNo. is a place holder in the game.
