Track Ballast

I thought this would be just for decoration, but it actually works well to plan out a railroad line for free, then you use the upgrade tool to turn the ballast into track.
It makes laying out a complex rail junction much more cost effective as it costs nothing to place and nothing to demolish, so you can plan to your heart's content, then only lay your track when everything is perfect.

Nice work. Simple and effective.

Very useful to simulate old/dismissed railways

TpF2?

it would be nice if there was some invisible tracks
Imperator Rax Raxous 21 Sep, 2019 @ 7:56am
Ne interessante Idee.

Like the look, easy to use and works very well .
VacuumTube 11 Aug, 2018 @ 3:00pm
I know why now, because I changed the speed of it to 400 to get it away from the normal tracks which are selected quite more often. Unfortunately, the only way to order the track menu is the speed but if the ballast has a higher speed than the normal tracks, the catenaries disappeares.

@Vinny
You can use the highspeed track upgrade for conversion, if you apply it twice it will even allow for slow speed tracks.

@Rasiator
Catenaries shouldn't just disappear, are you using any other modded tracks?
VacuumTube 4 Aug, 2018 @ 5:06am
Why does the catenary disappear when laying parallel tracks?
Ozgamer 27 Apr, 2018 @ 10:53pm
@malakie, they're referring to the AI construction crew as it were.. they tend to build over railway lines,
Malakie 31 Dec, 2017 @ 6:06pm
AI? What AI? The game does not have an AI.
maculator 26 Nov, 2017 @ 10:32pm
Sehr nützlich, vorallem um Gleisanlagen aufzuhübschen.
VinnyViking 18 Jul, 2017 @ 11:53am
Would be great if you could upgrade it to real tracks. Want to use it for planning track expancions ahead of time preventing me to demolish buildings
sergeant_0ddball 22 Apr, 2017 @ 11:37am
I like this. I use it when I delete a line from what was a double track area, but I want to show it was double track at one point/I might want to rebuild there in the future.
✪ dr_slump  [author] 9 Apr, 2017 @ 1:54pm
That must be either a bug or caused by one of the recent updates. I haven't been playing the game for the last few months, so I can't give a definite answer. Maybe I can find some time to look into it though.
James 9 Apr, 2017 @ 9:37am
Every time I add anything from the workshop (completely unrelated items) all of my track ballast converts itself to normal track, with catenary. The same thing happened when the last patch was released. It can't be converted back, so each time I have to bulldoze it all and relay the ballast.

Hedgerow 28 Dec, 2016 @ 2:48am
check that i found it
Hedgerow 28 Dec, 2016 @ 2:47am
That doesn't help its not showing in the load game menu and its not there when i start a new free game could you be more precise as to what to do please
✪ dr_slump  [author] 27 Dec, 2016 @ 12:50pm
After subscribing you have to add the mod manually to the save game in the "load game" menu or alternatively when creating a new free game.
When that's done, it should show up as a track variant in the track building menu next to the standard and high-speed track.
Hedgerow 27 Dec, 2016 @ 5:14am
How do i add this to the game doesn't seem to be showing up anywhere?
ExoticParallel 15 Dec, 2016 @ 11:30am
Good that information should be in your description
✪ dr_slump  [author] 15 Dec, 2016 @ 9:35am
20 => 40% the cost of a standard track, respectively 25% the cost of a highspeed track
ExoticParallel 14 Dec, 2016 @ 6:10pm
Cost?
✪ dr_slump  [author] 8 Dec, 2016 @ 9:29am
Actually, I did create invisible tracks and they work fine. However, it's extremelly difficult to find them again. ;)
ymer234 7 Dec, 2016 @ 9:49pm
Off road trains! Wheey. That is a reaccuring dream for me as a locomotive driver, that I drive off track and it still works. Mabye I've been dreaming in a pre-release of transport fever!
✪ dr_slump  [author] 7 Dec, 2016 @ 12:10pm
The trains for some reason don't come to a standstill, they keep crawling around at 1-2 km/h, which is slower than the speed pedestrians walk at.
It shouldn't really be a concern though, unless maybe you start building switches with it. Even then, you can always ensure proper line usage by placing waypoints.
Nick B.[US] 6 Dec, 2016 @ 6:09pm
Ah, so they don't actually move on them then? Do they just stop?
✪ dr_slump  [author] 6 Dec, 2016 @ 4:48pm
Basically yes, although I reduced the maximum speed to 0 km/h.
Nick B.[US] 6 Dec, 2016 @ 3:29pm
So are trains still able to transverse this because it is a type of track or not?
✪ dr_slump  [author] 30 Nov, 2016 @ 1:25pm
Yes, that's one thing you can do with it. It might look a bit nicer though.
ymer234 30 Nov, 2016 @ 12:15pm
Ahh, so instead of doing AI-control - in typical Colonel Failiure manner - by laying tracks a couple of 100 meter outside town, you just put ballast down.
