I watched your video, its great but reading on I see the software used is no longer supported and the updated software is expensive. Has anyone given Meshroom a go https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4NTf0hMjtY ? I found a video on it but didn't any posts where this was being used instead, so maybe its no good.
joeyvera  [author] 9 Apr, 2019 @ 12:11pm
I tried it, but couldn't make it work properly.
Nomadicus 14 Feb, 2019 @ 5:34pm
You could try 3DF Zephyr Free, though this program looks like it was better for our purposes
gilbertguillen 14 Feb, 2019 @ 2:34pm
I want to start scanning minis for TTS mods, is there another application for free that can be used for this??
Watafaka 14 Mar, 2018 @ 2:07am
@Nomadicus, exactly!
Nomadicus 13 Mar, 2018 @ 11:30pm
Wait, even WITH a subscription you have to pay micro-transactions for everything you use the app for???
Watafaka 13 Mar, 2018 @ 2:42pm
@🎸Yowi🎸, I want to scan some miniatures for a mod I'm working on, but now Auodesk Recap Photo needs credits to upload projects and for the 30 days trial you only get 40 credits (one project requires 12), which is far from the amount needed. So they made the app unusable, even with subscription you still have to spend money on credits...total bulls**t. Anyway, have you find any alternative, or any other way to scan your miniatures?
Thanks!

You could start a pateron and have people like Joe pay into it to cover the monthly cost.. have rewards as scan requests.
joeyvera  [author] 2 Jan, 2018 @ 4:31am
Well, you can still use the 30 days trial period in recap photo. And spend a month doing nothing but creating 3d models.

I don't think they give a shit! :D
Naveed #No2IRGC 30 Dec, 2017 @ 9:20am
@joeyvera Perhaps someone could just email the company explaining that we are just poor gamers? And maybe they could giive TTS players a discount?
joeyvera  [author] 30 Dec, 2017 @ 1:25am
I'm afraid so. I've done some test with 3dF Zephyr, but not happy with the results so far. Besides the process takes too long. :-(
Nomadicus 29 Dec, 2017 @ 11:56am
Apparently the app you used to make these scans has been discontinued as of 12/1/17.... It is being rebundled in a larger pro app by Autodesk that costs $40 a month! Are there any other apps that might be capable of this same technique?

Hi Rignak. Hi am not able to do scans at the moment (at least during one month) but there is another user doing the IA miniatures. Just search for imperial assault miniatures in the workshop. I don't know if he's scanned Vinto, but he'll probably do it soon if he didn't.
Rignak 26 Sep, 2017 @ 8:10pm
Any Chance you could do Vinto From Imperial Assualt

there is a 2x2 lego piece that rotates, I had some from old star wars lego sets. This is what it looks like:

joeyvera  [author] 24 Aug, 2017 @ 2:05am
It's not actual Lego what I used but a similar toy sold Spain many many years ago. But I'm pretty sure that Lego has available many rotary pieces, but I don't have any lego, so I can't help further. Maybe googling you'll find what you're looking for. Anyway, you can see in my workshop I am currently using a lazy susan bought in amazon.
Tragic 23 Aug, 2017 @ 3:43pm
what lego parts do you use to allow it to rotate like that?
Melon Pumpkinhead 7 Apr, 2017 @ 12:43pm
This would be great for Amiibo!
Brainfood 26 Mar, 2017 @ 11:18am
would love to see this done with cthulhu wars and the rest of the kingdom death monster monsters
MI_Trooper0050 8 Mar, 2017 @ 3:17pm
id love to do this with my Americans for Bolt action TTS needs more real miniatures! lol
joeyvera  [author] 27 Feb, 2017 @ 3:17am
I do. But only a few of them painted.
El Rafa 26 Feb, 2017 @ 11:37pm
Very nice, dude. Do you have the imperial assault miniatures? Good work and thanks anyway!
joeyvera  [author] 2 Feb, 2017 @ 10:36pm
1 human cleric, 1 human fighter (human barbarian coming soon)
Damikeis 2 Feb, 2017 @ 3:50pm
Is there any human minatures so far?
joeyvera  [author] 1 Feb, 2017 @ 10:39pm
It's not time consuming at all. It takes 15 min/miniature. About legality, I'm sure there is a lot to discuss, but eventually people remove models to not get involved in legal disputes.
ScythianUA 1 Feb, 2017 @ 10:42am
i was doing this like 4 years ago...it is very timeconsuming and illegal in fact...dont be surprised if your models will vanish from hosting space after few days,,,stupid copyrights...
Cambric 31 Jan, 2017 @ 8:26am
This is amazing! I play our D&D session using Table Top - and the only frustrating part, is not finding all the minatures that I own, such as Yuan-Ti. Going to see if I can figure this all out - LOVE it!
joeyvera  [author] 29 Jan, 2017 @ 3:12am
Well, I am not using autofocus, so the setting I use keeps all the parts of the miniature focused. The rest of the platform is not, but we are not interested on that part. So far the analysis of the data seems to be pretty accurate using non-focused part of the platform, and eventually this is enough to get the desired result. Obviously DSLR should get better information of the whole scene, but I wonder if having that information really makes the difference in the final result. In any case, I'm looking forward to seeing your work and how the process can be improved.
asebal 29 Jan, 2017 @ 3:05am
@joeyvera I mean for example some parts of the miniature (as it rotates) or the LEGO base.. they are out of focus as the webcam lenses are not so closed (and we can't change the aperture). Photogrammetry makes a pixel by pixel comparison of the whole scend and being out of focus can distract the software when taking some pixels as reference.
joeyvera  [author] 29 Jan, 2017 @ 2:51am
Hi asebal, what do you mean by " webcams are unable to focus the entire scene"?

You only need to focus the miniature, not the whole scene.
asebal 29 Jan, 2017 @ 2:38am
hi joeyvera! Your original blog post inspired me and made me investigate further about photogrammetry! Now i'm having a lot of fun (and great results) using a DSLR to scan Descent miniatures! I firts tried with the same webcam you use but as webcams are unable to focus the entire scene the results are limited! Thanks a lot for sharing your work! un trabajo excelente!:steamhappy:
joeyvera  [author] 29 Jan, 2017 @ 1:17am
He's trying to create the tiles for some unreleased expansions.
Beaky 28 Jan, 2017 @ 4:29pm
Isnt there allready tiles for descent?
WeirdoWithBeardo 28 Jan, 2017 @ 1:54pm
i've found a rather complex but simple way to make tile like meshes to do it from vector graphics, search google for a tutorial on how to make a 2d image 3d, take an image of the tile then follow the tutorial and it should make a pretty well done tile mesh, takes a few tries to attempt, but look at my Krosmaster arena mod, I used that technique to make the scenery then used blender to attach the different meshes into one
joeyvera  [author] 28 Jan, 2017 @ 10:44am
My expertise with blender is very limited, so... if ANY OF THE GUYS WHO BUILT DESCENT TILES READ THIS... Please contact Tarusol and give advice!!!
Tarusol 28 Jan, 2017 @ 10:12am
I want to do the same with the game Descent. the minutares are not the problem ( build a scanning table out of "lego" as well^^) but i need some help with the dungeon tiles. how do i create the models (with blender for example) and the more important thing: how to create the UV for the textures. i cant get it to work. blender messes up the UVs all the time.... please help
joeyvera  [author] 27 Jan, 2017 @ 2:35pm
Also... Another option would be to mail the miniatures for scanning and after that send them back to you (or the owner) but mail from the US to Europe it's quite expensive because of the customs, so ideally it'd be better if you find someone there to do the job.
joeyvera  [author] 27 Jan, 2017 @ 2:32pm
Sorry but... I can't do that. As far as I am not getting any profit I think it's ok to share my work, I don't know if doing that would have any ilegal implication. Besides, I'm doing this because I like to do it, and because sharing makes this community great. I'm also enjoying other people works, but I'm a very busy person, doing this in my spare time, but I cannot commit to something I might not be able to fulfil because lack of time.

Anyway, I think you should have a little patience because I'm sure there are going to be more people scanning miniatures very soon, so maybe someone can do the ones that you want, and... I would also suggest you spend that money in the components required to get this by yourself. It's a really nice feeling to see your creations in the "virtual world"

:-)
Naveed #No2IRGC 27 Jan, 2017 @ 2:05pm
What if we give you money to buy them so you can scan them?
joeyvera  [author] 27 Jan, 2017 @ 11:33am
Hi Guy,

You can "read" the URL editing the miniature. Once you know the URL you can download those files you are asking (the info you want is just there), however I believe that because these miniatures have been scanned (and not modeled in 3d) the mesh is not suitable for 3d printing. In any case you can try and let us know the result.
Spicy Memes 27 Jan, 2017 @ 10:50am
Can you upload the miniature files so is possible to 3d print them also
darleth 27 Jan, 2017 @ 12:41am
Muchas gracias por el vídeo..

I'm sorry mr Inmmortal, but I don't have those miniatures. Hopefully someone around have them and is able to do it after watching my video. ;-)
Naveed #No2IRGC 26 Jan, 2017 @ 11:43pm
