I really hope you will update this for GS one day.Great immersion mod. This still works btw,you just won't see names for newer civilizations. My favorite mod, besides Real strategy AI.

Love the goal behind this mod.
Great work!

Something I've noticed with this mod is that the names are often too long. For example, I've mainly only seen Germanic civs (with the exception of Norway) using three parts to their names as opposed to two, which is far more typical IRL. This results in some weirdly long names and also increases the chances of the name making no sense. I've noticed the English names are especially strange.
Pyros 3 Sep, 2019 @ 4:14pm
Will there be a version compatible with GS?
Leldy 6 Apr, 2019 @ 1:56pm
Waiting here for RnF and GS updates <3
kjhi 16 Feb, 2019 @ 9:05am
Will this be GS compatible soon? Thanks.
sdgabai 14 Feb, 2019 @ 5:40pm
I don't know modding officially; but, it was flagged as incompatible for GS for me by either GS or Enhanced Mod Manager. I don't know which flagged it to be honest. Thank you for this mod and your time modding. All of you modders are awesome!
alexanderyou 14 Feb, 2019 @ 2:56pm
Any plans to update this for gs?
Lucian Sigmarile 19 Oct, 2018 @ 12:07pm
I'm french and the french names are funny but not really realistic x) "Baie-Sabl" should be "Baie-Sable", "Riouafles" -> Royhalles, Laney -> Lanais or Lanoy. But "Veauboise" sounds great !
I think names like : Haute-Fontaine, Bourgemestre, Fort-Saint-Esprit or Muraillaise should be great but it's just my opinion.
Lucian Sigmarile 19 Oct, 2018 @ 11:59am
I don't have R and F and it doesn't work
diceycloth 29 Sep, 2018 @ 7:31am
please do more names
Library of Alexandria 20 Jul, 2018 @ 11:03pm
Checking in nearly 3 months later, have all the names been completed yet?
POPISowyNumer 13 Jul, 2018 @ 7:41am
Man, i'd really love to help you with Polish names, but the format of the list is burdensome to read, and edit.
Do you have some easier way to edit the names?
Finarfin 31 May, 2018 @ 7:43am
I never seemed to be able to get this mod working at all.
Anzelak🦑 30 May, 2018 @ 2:24pm
Months ago when I used this mod, a tooltip showed up explaining the etymology of the name. Any idea why this isn't showing?
Pre55ure 30 May, 2018 @ 1:43pm
what would be good is a random map generator

Done
HandyVac  [author] 21 Apr, 2018 @ 3:02am
Not yet. I'm kind of busy this month so It'll be a while till I get round to writing lists for the Rise And Fall civs.

If anyone wants to help out by writing a few words, or even a whole civ's list, then there's a template you can fill out in the mod's folder (CNG_WordList_Template.xml) and forward to me on civfanatics (follow the alternate dowload link above).
Library of Alexandria 21 Apr, 2018 @ 1:31am
Have all the civs been updated yet?
Koizumi Yokumo 8 Apr, 2018 @ 5:53pm
oh hey, if you're back, would you please let me tweak the Japanese list? The concept is great but there are some words that really look out of place, like, I don't think I've ever heard anyone use the word 'gyoniku' ever.
HandyVac  [author] 19 Mar, 2018 @ 7:39am
New version up, addidng word list for Scotland. I intend to add lists for the other Rise And Fall civs over the next few weeks.
HandyVac  [author] 14 Mar, 2018 @ 5:17pm
This works fine with Rise And Fall, none of the changes made by the DLC or the recent patch interfere with it.

If anyone's having problems I suggest following the general troubleshooting advice for Rise And Fall in this stickied thread:

Works for me.

Not working for me either. i'll stick to rosetta for now, unfortunatelly.
tilarium 11 Feb, 2018 @ 11:20am
Bummer. Hopefully we'll see an update soon!
Optimus Christ 10 Feb, 2018 @ 4:02pm
Not working for me either.
alexanderyou 10 Feb, 2018 @ 2:45pm
Wasn't working for me
tilarium 10 Feb, 2018 @ 2:32pm
Anyone know if this is working with R&F? Forgot how boring it is seeing all of the same city names in the same order.
Perry7484 / Briantin de Montrei 6 Feb, 2018 @ 5:23pm
What an interesting idea! Looking forward to seeing where this goes :)
Anzelak🦑 4 Feb, 2018 @ 11:50pm
In addition, are there any plans to make a similar mod/update this one for Rise and Fall?
Anzelak🦑 3 Feb, 2018 @ 8:19am
@Tumnaselda Hi mate, thank for the info :)
Koizumi Yokumo 23 Jan, 2018 @ 3:08pm
@HandyVac Hey, if you want any help making the Japanese city names better, I'd be more than happy to help. Some of the words used in the current version... look a bit strange.
Enzo 20 Jan, 2018 @ 8:41pm
@HandyVac Can you make aversion of just english names for all (Mods & DLC Included) Civilizations? :steamhappy:
Tumnaselda 20 Jan, 2018 @ 6:56pm
@Quipperfist Never tested on multiplayer, but as long as I understand the script correctly, it's just a city auto-renaming script in the end. So the mod should work, with or without my own little tampering on it.
Anzelak🦑 18 Jan, 2018 @ 7:00pm
@Tumnaselda Have you managed to make this work multiplayer?

@HandyVac This is one of my favourite mods. If I use it multiplayer, will it cause crashes or just cause cities to have different names to the players who join?
Tumnaselda 31 Dec, 2017 @ 11:09am
Also, while I was reading your script I have found a problem with it.

Your script prefers higher-indexed words for non-pos 0 word lists, which means there are some words not getting a chance to be used at all, while some words getting more chance to be used, causing mild to serious repetition.

I've fixed that part but I've only tested for Korean city names. Also I don't know if you are okay with me tempering with your script. Please let me know what you are thinking about it. Thanks again.
Tumnaselda 31 Dec, 2017 @ 11:08am
Well I've solved the most of the problems.

1. Add "=" for the 2nd word, "[space]" for the 3rd+ word. Why "="? look #4.
2. Doesn't need a fix anymore after several word list tweak.
3. Randomness does that. What happens happens.
4. Went through the script, it deletes all the words with "[space]" and "-" whenever it wants to change the city name, which doesn't work well with Korean city name. Thus adding "=" instead of "-" for the 2nd word as above.
Tumnaselda 18 Dec, 2017 @ 9:33am
Also, an unrelated question, but are you planning to make new lists for the upcoming expansion pack?
Tumnaselda 18 Dec, 2017 @ 9:33am
(continued)

3. How does the script chooses a word to use, anyway? The city above, "water river", was built right next to 3 stones. Intuitively it should have a word for stone. Can the script be improved to include such logic? Or was it intentionally omitted because there was some unexpected side-effect?

4. How does the script chooses to either add or replace a word? I have noticed that the script seems to replace whenever there's a [space], and that's why I decided to use a hypen for the problem #1. It would be great to know the logic behind it, though.

Thanks in advance. I know many of these questions can be answered if I can understand your script... I'm working on it.
Tumnaselda 18 Dec, 2017 @ 9:33am
Hey, I'm finding this mod pretty interesting! Thanks.

I'm tweaking an .xml file around to make a Korean one because of upcoming expansion. But I have some problems, and it will be great to get an insight from you.

1. Let's say there are "ABC" and "ABCD" for the loc 0, and "DEF" for the loc 1. The script creates the city named "ABCDEF" by combining "ABC" and "DEF". but the UI script seems to find "ABCD" first in the dictionary, so it says "ABCD: [...]" and "EF: unknown" on the UI. The problem is, this can happen a LOT in Korean words. I think I can get around this by using a hypen (-) on the head of the second word, though.

2. Is there a way to stop the script from using 2 words with the same meaning? One example is a city named "water river". I mean there are a lot of water-related words for the town's name, because it's important, but it shouldn't be used twice.
HandyVac  [author] 25 Nov, 2017 @ 3:27pm
@alexanderyou
There's no dropdown menu, but if you're willing to edit a file in a text editor then you can achieve this by changing a line in CNG_Options.xml
(the mod files will be somewhere in Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\289070\)

change
<Row Name="OverrideCivHuman" Value=""/>
to
<Row Name="OverrideCivHuman" Value="CIVILIZATION_FRANCE"/>
and it'll generate from the french list regardless of what civ you're playing as.

I found it useful when testing but I didn't think many players would be interested, and it's awkward to add stuff like that to the uiser interface.
alexanderyou 25 Nov, 2017 @ 2:55pm
Would it be possible to have a dropdown menu in the game setup that lets you pick different namelists for the city generator? I love the french city names, but don't always want to play as france, so this would be pretty cool. It would also let people using modded civs have the random name generator too, even if there isn't a namelist specifically for that civ.

Something like: default (whatever the normal namelist for the civ would be), american, french, spanish, etc. Not sure if it would be too much work or not, but I think it would be a nice feature.
Nesano 10 Sep, 2017 @ 12:51pm
Does there exist a mod like this, but for adding more possibilities to random unit naming?
HandyVac  [author] 7 Aug, 2017 @ 6:01am
Alternatively, you could send me a list of words, with translation, gender and word order (i.e. prefix, suffix or stem) for each, and I'll code them in myself.

Have sent you a friend request so you we can email each other, or you can upload files to me over on the civfanatics forum. [forums.civfanatics.com]
HandyVac  [author] 7 Aug, 2017 @ 6:01am
Sure, any help with wordlists would be appreciated. I'm no linguist, and I couldn't find much about latin toponymns on the web, so Rome's list is pretty much just words copy and pasted from a Latin dictionary.

The only coding required would be very simple, opening CNG_WordList_Roman.xml in a text editor and adding new items to the list. Hopefully the notes and comments in that file are enough to explain how stuff should be formatted. It's not really set up for gendering, but should be possible by writing seperate lists for male and female words, in the same way as America has seperate lists for english and spanish words.
Willelmus 6 Aug, 2017 @ 1:28pm
Man, this mod is a GREAT idea, BUT.....!!

The names don't feel very organic. I mean, from a linguistic standpoint. It's neat that it's no longer landlocked London, but now it's "Nice City by the Palm Trees", or something of the sort.

Latin names for Rome, for instance, are... quite awful. Between the words they would never use (and never used) in city naming, and the grammatical and gender errors, it makes it all seem a bit too weird.

If you want, I can help make up a coherent Latin worldlist; I'm no coder, but I can provide naming conventions, word formation, and corrections on grammar, words or concepts. If you're interested, send me an email, I'll be glad to help.
HandyVac  [author] 6 Aug, 2017 @ 12:59pm
Thanks. I see the problem now, citystares were getting treated differently from major civ cities. Shouldn't be hard to fix.
