The icons on the cards range from simple to confusing and consulting the rules to see what the cards do is fairly common. When I first went through the deck myself I was able to decipher the rules for maybe 1/3 of the cards without consulting the rules. For some cards a vertical line between two icons means you can do one effect or the other. For other cards a vertical line means if the first was done, the second applies, etc.
Other cards have rules not defined in the icon. For example Eros has very special setup requirements regarding his workers being at the opposite ends of the board that the icon doesn't clarify. Hermes can choose to move 0 spaces, etc. So for some of the cards consulting the rules is mandatory.
I'd recommend your friend simply jot notes down in their language about what their god does so you don't have to remind them beyond an initial explanation. I don't think avoiding the rules completely is possible.
