PS - you might want to watch parts 1 & 2 to make total sense of everything!

Hey @Blackarmor... this wonderful creature played a role in this little story video I made - thank you!

make a dune style one
shadenquest 20 Mar, 2019 @ 7:51pm
that is freakin amazing
Anasazi Bob 5 Mar, 2018 @ 4:55pm
@Nemerend
I would like to see you make one that fits that description. This is as close as you can get in SE
RoboCake 17 Aug, 2017 @ 12:10am
@BreakStuffStealThings
flapping motion still isn't what causes it to fly, also, birds with thrusters on the bottom of their wings? really? gonna need a citation on that one.
BadAdviceBot 19 Jul, 2017 @ 6:02pm
@Nemerend
Just because the game doesn't simulate fluid mechanics does not mean this isn't an ornithopter. An ornithopter is an aircraft that flies by flapping its wings. This definition would also apply to IRL birds with thrusters on the bottoms of their wings that trigger when they flap.
Juice Miginty 6 Jun, 2017 @ 7:17pm
STILL AWESOME

@Nick_is_hraar
Thanks dude
Nick_is_hraar 3 Jun, 2017 @ 6:36pm
i like how this has a gatling gun but at the same time you dont want it to be fake.
seriously though, it looks amazing.
GmB 1 Jun, 2017 @ 11:46pm
this isnt an ornithopter at all
:steamsad:
Ulthane40k 25 May, 2017 @ 6:09am
looks cool to bad it kills the game sim so this would have to be the only thing in the world
BlackArmor  [author] 24 May, 2017 @ 8:32pm

*Rolls up a newspaper* this fake....
Horny Rooster 23 May, 2017 @ 11:46pm
nice, really nice
Molten Carnage 23 May, 2017 @ 10:52pm
Sorry about that. I guess there was lag durring my post
BlackArmor  [author] 23 May, 2017 @ 10:05pm
I just said I tried using gyros to do that. Artificial mass does nothing on a planet
Molten Carnage 23 May, 2017 @ 9:42pm
What about gyros or arificial mass blocks that turn on and off to counter the bobing, timed according to the movement of the wings?
BlackArmor  [author] 23 May, 2017 @ 8:35pm
That wouldn't help the rocking, it would just make it even more fake. I was able to make it fly without any rocking using gyro override, but that made it a lot harder to fly because the gyros resisted any turning movement.
Molten Carnage 23 May, 2017 @ 7:23pm
Awesome creation. Now you just have to figure out how to stablize it. Maybe keep the wings but put the thrusters on the body instead?
Nick_is_hraar 23 May, 2017 @ 2:49pm
This is nice
also, its hard to fly
i like it
Avelius 23 May, 2017 @ 1:22pm

raz334 22 May, 2017 @ 12:08pm
If they ever make pistons completly safe this would be awesome but until then its... EXPLODIUM!!!!!
Razyem 22 May, 2017 @ 10:29am
No words can be spilled to describe how weird and yet cool this is.

Awesome concept!
DamianTheAlien 22 May, 2017 @ 2:28am
Completely impractical but very clever. Illustrative of the creative side of space engineers. Well done.
Cognitiv 22 May, 2017 @ 2:23am
Beautifull
Anubis 21 May, 2017 @ 9:37pm
@Purrfect-Blinky great pun "kinda bugged"

Sweet Lexx Reference, All Hail his shadow.......
Purrfect-Blinky 21 May, 2017 @ 4:58pm
It's kinda bugged thought... ... I'll let myself out.
BlackArmor  [author] 21 May, 2017 @ 2:10pm
The concept of a civilization using ornithopters is pretty unique, but the concept of that machine has been around for a while. The name is just a combination of a couple Greek roots for "bird" and "wing"
Viper 21 May, 2017 @ 1:55pm
@BlackArmor huh, that's fascinating. I remember reading Dune and being like "wow this guy is so creative to come up with this stuff". maybe not, eh
BlackArmor  [author] 21 May, 2017 @ 1:26pm
Hah uh no dude the name was coined well before dune was around
Viper 21 May, 2017 @ 12:31pm
@GENRY yeah i think the word ornithopter is originally from Dune. but I think it gets used in a general sense now for things that fly by mimicking wing flapping
John Bee 21 May, 2017 @ 10:07am
Fair enough
BlackArmor  [author] 21 May, 2017 @ 9:58am
Haha thanks RedPanda. Yeah if people can make "hovertanks" that slide on top of frictionless wheels then I'm going to call this an ornithopter and lose no sleep over it.
John Bee 21 May, 2017 @ 9:37am
I tried to make a true ornithopter using Digi's wing mod, I couldn't get it to work due to the wings not providing enough lift however I am currently trying to reduce weight and make the flapping much more stable. This ornithopter, despite using thrusters, is still pretty cool, well done
SilverJeune 21 May, 2017 @ 9:06am
This insect looks like the red alert 3 japanese drones. Nice job! :steamhappy:
Tankred 21 May, 2017 @ 2:32am
dune?
BlackArmor  [author] 20 May, 2017 @ 10:22pm
Great Nemerend, I wasn't aware of that at all
Puppyguard 20 May, 2017 @ 9:52pm
Yes, but it simulates flight with a flapping motion.
