You can simply upgrade any ship component by using the "view" button (Eye icon) and setting it to view only "Iron" and "Engine". Now all parts except the Iron Engines will be ghosted and unselectable. Now choose the item you would like to replace it with, for example Titanium Engines, then while holding down "ALT" you can left-click to replace the block under your cursor with the currently selected replacement. Note that you can also easily change the Engines with Cargo bays or any other type, not that it would be useful to do so, but so that you understand the replacement freedom.
On some ships the designers have included "framework" blocks for the specific purpose of later upgrades.
The 1 slot Beggar design which was never actually released by Derp has gained a pleasant and surprising following and part of my collab with Derp has been taking his hulls and making them do things they were not intended to do.
I am reluctant to get started until the next milestone though given how things change and it REALLY surprised me how much time ended up being spent on just that little single slot vessel which imo had already had the hard part done for me (Derps designs have no equal and my refurbs would not be of the standard they are if not for his incredible creativity and imagination).
But most of the blocks are so thin, they get blown away by just a few gatling gun hits... and as everyone who plays the game knows, combat can be difficult to avoid, with the pirates and alien ships raiding every sector about once every 10 to 15 minutes.
It'd be nice if the ship were just a bit more durable, or at least have some durable spots to mount turrets onto (other than the gradual-sloped front glacis piece).
Also, it's built more around my personal playstyle and the circumstances of the time (titanium wasn't as common in the starter areas back then) where combat is generally avoided at the Iron tier (because that's a horrible idea but taking potshots and letting the allied AI ships destroy them still entitles you to rewards) until you get a proper Titanium ship with full IFG coverage. Once you get yourself some shields, then by all means, charge in.
Lastly, energy dependant turrets don't perform well in practice at the start since the usual early game ship sizes/possibilities (and thus power output) can't support them in general. The starter ones are completely randomised so starting with energy consuming turrets is RNGesus taunting you, unfortunately.
Thank you though.
Looking forward to your next ship :D
You should go check that one out.

Your chassis, my engineering.
Pioneer 2 (refurb) http://imgur.com/I31Uea7
All stats are base, no mods, no turrets, no upgrades, skeleton crew.
I ask because I love your work and that simple Pioneer Miner I now have 5 variants of with additional systems and functionality from Iron all the way to Xanion.
I loved the ship so much I "grew" it through my current MP game, I have made huge internal changes but the exterior looks pretty much as it did.
The Banshee and Wendall designs both looks utterly gorgeous from aesthetic point of view, I would love to be able to tinker with them.
I also wondered how you would feel if I were to make the retro-engineered designs I have made of your ships available for public consumption?
I will of course give credit 100% I am a huge fan. But I see merit in taking some of these designs and allowing new players to build them from Iron and Titanium and modifying internals to suit.
THANK YOU!
P.S. ignore the additional turret slots, I left a module in there.
