How does the workshop work?

I am very noob, so far, I have just played the demo to see if it works on my computer. I've played games with worshops and mods and such, but how does this workshop work? What mods would you recommend if any?

I cannot tell you about making mods but I can recommend some. Running with Trenchfoot, Mass Effect overhaul, Weltkrieg, Increased Armory, and Casus Belli.
