Arena FPS's only don't do well for 2 reasons:
1.) They don't have good graphics most of the time & in 2017 with free access to engines such as Unreal & even Unity, this isn't excusable.
2.) They're only released on PC, which is a poor decision because there is already access to so many that have had active communities, for several decades. Where consoles have barely any to none, and never have/had any new releases. While PC does have a bigger community, the money is more on consoles. If you want a game to do well release it on both console & PC.
Also I just love Quake Live & feel the better it looks the more people that will play it.
That would probably be because id doesn't host the servers (nor any kind of infrastructure) anymore so players would be able to do whatever they want with the tiers and their skillrating.
