Where should I start?
So, I've been wanting to try out modding a game. Any game. And once I saw a small game like this, yet with a thriving modding communtiy, I figured I'd give this a go.

But where should I start with modding for this game? I genuinely don't know.

First off, you should play the game for a while, to experience the feel and style of it. You will know how things work and if it's worth it at all.
Then you can try to make simple ship. It's polygon count is usually somewhere around 200 tris (but it can be way higher, the game will handle it, but it won't usually fit the style). And if you are skilled enough, you can make a new track with your enviroment (you can use ingame track creator to make the base).
It's simple 3D modelling most of the times with some texturing. Stats of the ships are set in game.
