I'm never sure when to award fame or which traits go on a card. Looking at some of the previous cards I'm not sure what sort of unwritten rules have been established.

For instance my Twisted Time card guarantees a possibility of getting food - you can always eat a meal in reverse resulting in throwing up a pristine meal ready for your enjoyment. It's also possible to cause a paradox (by doing something differently to how you saw your future self do it moments ago) which results in some completely random gain and pain cards. So it's possible to get any sort of gain out of the encounter, but not reliably. Should it have the "food" or the "gain any" trait? I could give it both, but the add every trait that might apply approach will lead to cards with seven or eight traits.

With fame, I'm never sure if you get fame for being a Big Damn Hero (tm) or for doing things that would make you famous. For instance making statues will generate fame in the core cards, but so will doing heroic things while nobody is watching. At the moment I'm taking a realism appraoch and giving fame awards for things that would make you (in)famous, but that has some strange side effects. For instance at the moment successfully stealing an object to start a fight in "Shrinking Child" awards no fame because if it works, nobody knows you did it. Failing and getting caught gives a small fame bump. It seems odd to reward failure in this way, but on the other hand the prize for getting it right is solidly better and it'd reward mastery for a player to know to screw it up if they really really needed fame and not any of the other possible rewards.

I think this is largely one of those things that you can't necessarily do "By the book", which is especially painful for me because I like things neat and tidy and tend to get pedantic about the things I create.

Just by looking through some random encounters in the editor, I can find examples of encounters that could have certain traits, but don't.
-The "Westwend Tavern" card rewards fame but doesn't have the fame gain trait.
-The "Wishing Well" card can dish out a wound card but doesn't have the wound trait.
-The "Pickpocket" card can reward a blessing but doesn't have the blessing trait.

Going off of these examples and the fact that traits are primarily used to help players quickly find the rights cards for whatever deck they're building, you should add traits that highlight the most important aspects of the encounter. Personally I would say the possibility to get gold/food/fame/wounds from an encounter doesn't immediately warrant the trait, but if the gain is likely to happen or in large enough amounts then it is justified. Depending on how complex your encounter is, you might have 8+ traits that apply, which is when it's time to prioritize traits or streamline the encounter

Those are my thoughts on the matter. I would love to hear what the devs have to say on this topic though. :)
