Playing in third person gives you a rather substantial extra awareness of what's happening around your character. Once you get used to the new perspective with regards to melee combat (which isn't a big deal nor very difficult) there is no downside to 3rd person, just upsides. 3rd person would become the "optimal" way to play. At the same time 3rd person view would decrease the emphasis on needing your allies to watch your back, as you now have a far better view of what's going around you and the literal ability to watch your own backside.
Doubt it will ever become an "official" part of the game for that reason (and you can play it in 3rd person "unofficially" as much as you'd like.)
I simply stated it changes the balance and feel of the game, one way or the other (whether you think it makes it easier, harder, or whatever is besides the point- the point being the perspective change affects game balance on some level by making some things harder/and/or easier) and that because of that it is unlikely to be 'sanctioned' officially. Devs (usually) don't play fast and loose with their game balance, no matter how trivial it may seem, and I'd be highly surprised if they'd decide to allocate their time to this over anything else.
-edit-
Out of the top of my head in a matter of seconds,
Does new 3rd person mode somehow make you crash your game in some weird, unexpected wtf way for that 0.1% of people that use computer setup X? (we all know they exist)
Does new 3rd person mode let you move your camera to see through walls or other stuff you're not supposed to be able to see?
Does new 3rd person mode make dodging easier and more powerful than intended because of the increased spacial awareness?
3 questions -and I'm sure there's many more- devs would want concrete answers on before slapping the "approved" sticker on something like this. That would require time. Time is money. Is 3rd person view worth dev's money? I'm sure you would think so. But would they?

Just hold X and you can get the same advantage right now, at least when it comes to peeking wall corners.
