Modding & Resources

I've wondered about this for a while now and since there isn't such a discussion made by anyone yet, I am making one. Maybe there was one before, but I could not find anything with the search.

This list should be useful for anyone making first steps into modding Surviving Mars.

Mod Tools including documentation and several sample mods are located into the game's directory \Surviving Mars\ModTools

The documentation is also available online here[github.com].

Surviving Mars reference source code at GitHub[github.com], which you can use to see how the gameplay systems work.

I did not realize that a sandbox game is all about micro management. Eliminating it also eliminates the need for a player and as a result it becomes a screen saver instead of a game.

I have much to learn about what is a good mod that enhances the game and one that eliminates the desire to play it.

Thanks for this.

I've found that 'HPK Archiver' (from [https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/tropico-3-4-5-hpk-archiver.113705/] ) has failed to extract some hpk files found in the wild, however nickelc's 'HPK Archiver for Haemimont Games Engine game files' has been able to extract these.

Yeah, it hasn't been updated for awhile, if you really can't use cmd line then I'd use it, otherwise:

I've made a mod called Expanded Cheat Menu, which comes with some tools to debug mods

I'm dying to start working on some new/alt art assets for rovers but not finding any example assets. Need a .blend file or at the very least a reference guide for rover building creation. Does the above mentioned extractor also extract .hpk 3d art assets in any kind of usable form? Or does it just unpack code?

Nothing usable by blender, there's a few example assets in the mod tools folder.

You can also use renderdoc to extract basic models, and import them into blender with: https://github.com/sbobovyc/GameTools/blob/master/Blender/import_pix.py
but they are basic models, you'll have to add a bunch of stuff. Head to the modders discord and check out the pin in asset-creation by bulletmagnet: https://discord.gg/7rX25ZE

Hey all:
I want to start modding, but I am unsure of step #1, step #2 of the process. Lets say you want to create a new building inside a dome where do you start ? Can someone be kind enough to point me a direction? I would greatly appreciate. I am retired and yes a gamer and yes a retired software developer...
