This is not really a workshop discussion but I wanted to talk about docking
One thing I have always hoped for was the ability to dock fighters with bigger craft and then move with the fighters docked.

I'm not really sure if this is appropriate or welcome for this discussion.

If I understand what I am looking at, entities with colliding dock tiles when docking is triggered are moved into position and then the connected state is established such that players can move between the respective dock tiles for ingress/egress

it seems that the thing holding ships in position is that they continually attempt to correct position to the othership dock point. i thought that it might be possible to alter it so that if one ship was significantly less mass (or not a station and the other entity a station), that only the lighter ship be affected by automatic docking movement.

i was considering perhaps that docks attached to docks on ships below 1000 mass might not trigger dockstress, so that it would be possible to dock fighters to larger ships.

if however docked ships are just being held in place because they are resting at the point where dockoffset moved them to, then it might not end up looking good because the attached fighters would be rubberbanding to their dock positions.

the practical reason why I would bother with any of this is that I like to go fly out to a ship with a fighter and then dock it. I guess it'd be a lot easier to have something that is disposed instead of docked, like a fighter that is spawned from a drone pod

While it sounds like interesting mechanics suggestion, you can already achive a similar effect with existing game mechanics. The solution also conviniently fits into this forum ;) If you build a workshop ship with logistics room like on your home base, you can travel to any location and spawn a new fighter on your airlock. I still think we should have some limiting factor to spawning ships like actual materials, for it to be more immersive. But it also works, like it is right now.

Yep, it should, that's why I created complex concept for mining and material cost for both building and repairing ships which would lead to some fundamental changes (much faster, but much more limited repairs, also existence of raidable mining convoys and ability to setup over time income of base materials). We will see if we get to implementation. As far as multiple ships joined being a thing, George said the issue is at sectors transition so I wouldn't bet on that happening.

Yeah i would hate if all of those already implemented systems like mining and drillbore would go to waste, if you choose not to continue with this.

By the way, a little off topic, but i wanted to thank you for changing the medbay respawn mechanics so your crew revives you in a new body, instead of sacrificing their own body. That solves so much issues for a mod that i have been making from time to time (like for an
eternity, sadly dont have that much time ). I want to make it like a journey to a very distant star system with some adventures on the way. So it was on hold until we would have a possibility for a reasonable fast return to the last location after death. Now with this ability to let your crew members stay on your ship with medbay, while you take a "logistics room" spawned shuttle to explore nearby sectors, it is a perfect solution to be able to revive on your ship every time instead of on the home base. Now if we only would have the possibility to upload like a folder of fleets with different locations to a workshop as 1 item, instead of every fleet with its own location being a separate item, it would be even more perfect.

Well, drill bore will have to find new purpose, we internally agreed that mining needs to work kinda differently, in future it might find its use as boarding pod, which would be fun mainly in multiplayer.

after messing with this I think that a launcher that abstracts the shuttle is probably a better solution.
