AI is so hit-and-miss
I wish they'd do a hotfix on the AI to the game... especially with storage and pathing.
I'll have tons of food (both raw and cured) in homes while the storage area is half empty, and the drying racks devoid of anything on them. You'll make a secondary village area and they'll still pick the further locations to return things or even to pick up weapons, etc.

Having the whole group ready for a big hunt is a thing too - you'll have half the party running to the area while the first half are launching weapons if you tell them to hunt. Usually I just call the alarm, grab everyone, and send them running at a target if I can spare the time, since a mass overkill spares more than having three guys stabbing it and getting injured in the process, or, gods forbid, chasing their prey for half the map.

I do adore the game, just wish the NPCs were a bit smarter about how things work... you'll have a single dude carrying a fishing spear be the one to decide to go after the hyena while the guys with the good spears go over and pick up sticks.

/also wishes children could be assigned for stick and berry foraging via the flag area since they can do so...

...and I've noticed the children are usually the ones who'll pick up the raw skins/meat/fish and take them to the correct racks, rather than the adults who just go 'this tent is fine'. Like dude, you spent hours catching that fish, you can take two seconds to throw it on this EMPTY DRYING RACK.

The livestock can be horrendous as well. They know where food and safety is and yet feel the need to wander miles off where they're in danger of being eaten... the dogs seem to be the only ones in this game who stick to their role without issue xD

AI can't be mod and it won't get any update from the Devs. So, you must do your part to help AI.

AI seems bad sometimes, but it is not broken. Perhaps, you need to understand some game mechanics a little more:
- Task assignment: first available person who capable of performing the task. Does not seem to consider distance from task or difficulty of task. Children might be assigned to pick up meat far away in dangerous place while adult might be assigned to pick up stick next to the camp. Try to keep your workload below 50 in non-planting/harvesting time to free up more adult.
- Storage: people will drop off materials at the near houses if people need rest above all other. Also, water are stored in houses, so people may stop there to drink as well.
- Hunting and fishing task does not include drying and curing. However, pickup task may include drying and curing.
- Hunting: people who does not have a range weapon will rush the target. Try to select all range group for hunting. Hold down "H" while drag select will select all hunting capable, but might not select all range. Try not to have old people in your hunt party. They are weak and got tired quickly. Try not to abuse alarm because you will disrupt so many tasks and make people tired when they have to run back to camp to change weapon. If you have the materials, set limit for spear and bow to 100% adult or more. Fishing tool, ax and pick:you do not need a lot of them. 10-20 each would be more than enough. You might need more pick and ax before you get the tech for sword as melee weapon.
- Tasks that are not required tool will usually assign to children.
- Drying and curing: having enough rack and high enough limit. Spread out the location. Build them closer to fishing area and stable. Build granary near by. If you do not have the tech for granary, build a storage hut and set it to store food only.
- Stable: build them near the river bank or lake so animal can get water quicker after the Winter and avoid path issue. Build well and hay stack next to stable. Remember to turn off water collection for the well far away or for animal feeding only.
