Would you guys be interested in more diversified heroes?
Born from the frustration of looking at the Allayi heroes wielding longswords and flying in all but one of the concept arts/portraits, I've decided to look into diversifying the hero roster with some random generation.

I would largely be making this mod for the benefit of my friends and myself, but I thought I would check on here to see if it was something that you guys were interested in.

I'm already making plans for how to adapt the special capacities of ranged/melee heroes to the other one and vice-versa, so it should be a little bit balanced (I plan on coopting already existing capacities).

I'd be all for this honestly. It'd look pretty neat for there to be more portraits, so that I don't have to see two Andom the Seers with exactly the same portrait.

Could possibly take it further and make more hero models if you can and would like to.

My 3d Modelling skilsl are limited to water bottles and hair dryers (All I know how to use is Solidworks for CAD). I could attempt to make some REALLY basic animations/portraits, but they would be so bad compared to the existing ones that it might not be worth. Mostly I would be changing gameplay elements, basically making each race have 1-2 additional unit types their heroes could be, and maybe giving the new unit typed heroes fitting abilities from other units.

An example would be something like giving the Allayi a new hero of the flying type, who had the monk's ability. He would also get the flying type skill tree from the Haunt hero.

Ideally, I would add a ranged option to all of the factions who only have melee heroes (Lords, Necro, Forgotten, Cultists) and a melee option for all of the ranged factions (Allayi, Vaulters, Drakken, Wild, Mogs, Mages, Clans).

Sounds quite neat! I was merely suggesting the models if you were able to make more models, but I'm totally fine with more hero portraits and animations.

The addition of melee and ranged heroes to the factions who don't have them sounds rather awesome! Would be interesting to see armies with more of the same faction heroes due to those additions.

Sounds cool! If you really feel motivated maybe even do all 3 (melee, ranged, magic) for each faction?

well, there are far more than three is the problem, and only certain factions make sense to have certain heroes. Like I said the allayi really need a flying unit that uses swords to go with their splash art and their units, and the roving clans would do well with a cavalry hero, if for nothing else just for flavor reasons.

also because if your default unit is cav, then your heros slows down the army too.

I was wondering why that wasn't on the main game too, as I've always wanted to use melee units on the Allayi and the Wild Walkers. Basically my only gripe with the game so far. I'd love to see a mod like this, although it probably would be a very complicated thing to do. If you can do it, then be our guest. We would greatly appreciate it, no doubt about that.

Like I was saying, the thing that has kept me from pursuing this project would be the fact that I do not in any world have the skill to make models of all of this stuff, or even really edit currently existing models, or even new portraits. I could probably write the code, I located the area that units are defined, and know how to make new units, including heroes with a custom mixture of traits, the hard part would be "how do I do this game justice when I'd have to cobble together models and do portraits in ms paint".

I think somewhere in the modding forums they mention some other resources to use for the visuals. Also I'd suggest at least using GIMP instead of ms paint. It's free (open source) and gives you a lot more control. Even if you don't know what you are doing with it you can use it like paint and there are tons of online tutorials for learning how to do more with it. I'm not very proficient with it myself but was able to pick stuff up pretty quickly when I daubbled with it working on graphics for mods for a different game.

Hhaaha, i mentioned MS Paint empahtically. I'm fluent in illustrator and photoshop mechanically, and have access to both. I'm just not great at non-vector based 2d art.
