I agree that challenges and endless levels are not super popular now, which is a shame. The devs encourage people to make adventure maps, which in terms of having the fewest restrictions, it's great. There isn't a reason anyone would make challenges now, unless they wanted to make a challenge that uses the arena or may want the difficulty of no checkpoints to make a difficult challenge. It would be better for someone to make adventures over challenges.
However, I wish people could get encouraged to make endless levels. Endless mode can get really boring seeing the same dev maps, and workshop endless maps can help spice it up. For example, if people think Insanium Endless is hard, just wait until you add the most grueling workshop endless levels, then you can truely have an insane experience that normal dev maps can't offer. Or maybe you want more decorative levels with fun and interesting enemy layouts. There's also the added benefit of being able to suggest them in twitch mode too, which no other level type can do.
It's hard to determine why challenges and endless levels are not popular anymore, there's a ton of factors that can affect it. I think that since the talented workshop creators would rather focus on adventures so they can make something creative, that leaves challenges and endless levels ignored, which may be a reason why nobody cares for them anymore. Maybe another factor is that the devs encourages you to make adventure maps over challenges or endless levels.
