Report a translation problem
Make sure you save your game before you start messing around with the flattening, you can't cancel it and "regrow" hills if things look way too ugly.
(and make sure you don't flatten/raise the ground in the main river to the point of blocking it, as that'd confuse the Trading boats)

Side note: Your workers need to be able to clear the trees before the terrain gets flattened. If the slope is too steep for that, placing a tunnel first will help as that clears the trees. Cancel the tunnel's construction and flatten once the trees have vanished.
