Game Not Loading With Mods
I installed 3 car mods from Steam Workshop. For the past 50 hours of game play, the game has been just fine. Up to quitting the game last night. Today, the game won't load to the menu screen unless I use safe mode. I went into Workshop and unsubscribed from those three mods and it still won't load to the menu without safe mode.

Does anyone know where Steam puts the files for Workshop content? Does it add something to a .config which doesn't get removed? What is there that's still telling the game there are mods installed?

I can play the game just fine in safe mode, but I have to remember to select that when I launch the game.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\

there will be several folders with workshop items from different games. Look for the folder that has a modification date that is very recent (when you played CMS21) to quickly see which folder is the cms21 folder.

Insider there will be more folders, for the different mods. Each mod subscribed to will have its own folder.


I would make sure you can verify the files when you check the settings for cms21.
Also, try disconnecting (logging off) from Steam and re-logging in.

cms21 mods really can't break the game. More likely a Steam cloud saving issue.

Okay. I did find and delete those folders. I'll try disconnecting; that's one I usually forget to do! LOL I'll also try verifying the files. Thanks!

Ok. I verified the files, it said 124 failed and would be recovered. I went to off line mode, then logged out. I logged back in and went to online mode. Still doesn't work. Then I thought, if it's a Steam cloud issue, disable cloud saves. Did that and it still doesn't work.

I would create a backup of the game save folder, uninstall game, and reinstall. At worst, it will work and you have lost all progress, at best you just import your save folder and will be able to continue. But there is a chance the save is corrupt, which means you are doomed.

At very worst, you will have to uninstall, reinstall the game. Not use mods, and enjoy it as it is until you figure out what caused your problem. Certainly avoid those mods.

Steam cloud is often unreliable at best, it is advised to make a local backup of your save files, maybe at the end of each major playing session.

Problem is, I can't find a save folder for this game. It's not under My Games, it's not in the Windows Saved Games folder nor in it's own folder. ???

Savegame folder is a hidden folder, just be careful. Put this on file explorer

%LOCALAPPDATA%\..\LocalLow\Red Dot Games\Car Mechanic Simulator 2021\
