Need an extra Workshop moderator?
Hey SEGA!

I'm a Workshop creator for SEGA Mega Drive & Genesis Classics and am proud to have created mods have a total of over 10,000 downloads. I'm sure many other creators are also proud of their acomplishments here on the SEGA Classics Workshop. However, a growing problem on the Workshop is that people are illegally uploading Sega games that are not part of the Sega Classics line. This stinks for creators like me (and other modders) who are making new game experiences for the games provided.

Sega Classics would be a great step for letting companies distribute their games with mod support on PC, but as it stands, Sega Classics' Workshop is as shady as any rom site. While at launch, illegal uploads were policed well, it seems that nobody is policing the Workshop anymore. And bans seem to never be given out despite multiple users infringing on copyright multiple times.

I would like to be moderator for the Workshop. I'd love to be able to make Sega Classics a great and legal place for mods. I check the Workshop at least once a day so you wouldn't have to worry about any illegal mods being up for long. Thanks Sega!

If we can nominate people I'd like to second this guy becoming a moderator.

Thank you. I got a reply from someone at SEGA this morning that they're going to work through my list and remove any infringing games. I do wish they would make me a mod as rather than making a list like last night, I could have taken action. The advice I was given was to both report and downvote any infringing content so make sure you keep on doing both. If they don't do anything by Friday I'll ping them again to either take action or have me moderate the Workshop.

I just went through the whole workshop list and made a collection of everything I would consider misuse of the platform. The list contains 83 items as of this writing.

https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=721090517

I'm not touching betas like Sonic Crackers, regional variants like Puyo Puyo, or pirate games like Rockman X3. I'm only listing what look like retail titles not related to the 58 games in the collection. Infringing titles go pretty far back if you sort by recently added, so I assume they're not getting removed unless the community flags them. I'll maintain this list for a little while and see what happens. If a few of us flag more, the list should shrink. This collection is a pretty bold move from Sega and I'd like to see more of this sort of thing, so I'd hate to see it turn into a piracy platform.

Any news on this front? I sure wonder if they are planning to do anything with Sega Classics on Steam at all now.

Thanks Sean for the collection; I just sent it over to SEGA. I have not heard anything from SEGA and it appears most of the mods I sent in my initial email are still up on the Workshop. I'm trying to get the developer's email so I can share it to try to get them to do something or the mod promotion. If I do not see anything done in a few days I'll post SEGA contacts I'm currently talking to but be aware they do not have direct control of this game's forum or Workshop. Below, I'll post the list of infringing mods I compiled so you can add them to your current collection.

END OF LIST

I think a few of those are homebrew (Fix It Felix?) , and I've already been alerted that Zero Tolerance and it's sequel were released by the developer. I'm not enough of a copyright nerd to say where Action 52 stands but I'd like to hear some opinions there.

I've gotten some uh... let's say "friendly" comments from the users you listed. I kinda expected that. Oh well. List is at 95 right now and I've yet to get another content removal email. Only one out of the last few dozen submissions looks like a legitimate upload. Things get even messier if you go and look at DLC requirements to make sure they're linked properly.

"I would like to be moderator for the Workshop. I'd love to be able to make Sega Classics a great and legal place for mods."

Why not both? Obviously they don't care or they would be doing it themselves. Why bother?

Because they left a pinned topic in the base Discussions asking us to do so? Just because they didn't assign any moderaters doesn't mean they want it happening, and they trust us enough to do something as simple as filing a few reports.

Misplaced trust in Steam from the start, and even just going by the attitudes in this one Workshop, but still.
Suroguner 20 Jul, 2016 @ 1:58pm
If they don't do anything, and this ♥♥♥♥ gets noticed by places like Kotaku and the Jimquisition, The workshop could be shut down and Sega possibly sued.

I count 144 out of 710, and more if you count unlicensed pirate titles. That's just over 20%.

Even if I already have the boxed Genesis Ultimate Collection on PS3,
Even if I have most of these games in other SEGA compilation games on PS2, GameCube, PC...
Even if I already bought the ports or remakes of some of these games, GBA ports for example,
Even if I have I don't know how many CD keys of these games waiting for me in a humble bundle account or so,
Even if I have also bought most of these games on others digital stores (3DS shop, Wiiware...)
Even if I have some of these games on my phone,
Even if I have most of these games unlocked as bonus in other games I bought,
Even if I have most of these games already installed in the flash memory of a new Genesis console published by SEGA.
Even if I have most of these games as cartridges for my original Genesis since I'm 6 years old, sometimes twice of even 3 times thanks to compilation cartridges like the Sonic Collection or the Starring Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck compilation. Just on the original Genesis, I have Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine 3 times.

I did buy any of these games at least 3 or 4 times, some of them maybe 6 or 7 or more.

If I want, I can download any of them and add them to my Steam library, opening in fullscreen, with a very beautiful picture for each game, that I already did by the way.

http://steambanners.booru.org/index.php?page=post&s=list&tags=sonic+2&pid=100

You'd see my "MegaDrive" category in Big Picture Mode, it's so sweet.

But still, I am just happy than I can download Aladdin, Quackshot and a "vanilla" version of Sonic & Knuckles (without Sonic 3) for the Steam Genesis Collection. Games I already bought one f;u:c;k:i;n:g hundred times. If copyright owners are still alive and unhappy about it, then they just have to move their bodies and publish them in the Steam store. Until then, be sure that each one of these games has been rentabilized one billion times, and you could check my steam account or just have a look at my appartment and my thousand boxes and cartridges to check if I am a pirate or whatever nocive for the videogame industry.

Now let us enjoy these Genesis games and go sleeping without any fear, we're not going to lose the workshop. Thank you to the uploaders by the way - and to the devs, of course.

Please apologize my english.

I hope none of you ever will be the moderator of nothing. Seriously. They are big boys and knew what they were doing when they opened an emulator to the workshop. If they want to act they will, they don't need you. Sega will be sued ? Yeah yeah, and Steam will close. And the internet too. Then the world collapse, right ? You need them more than they need you, obviously.

Because screw smaller modders who hoped to finally get a spotlight and support with their mods with fine assets instead of being choked by lack of modding support and lack of moderation.

What else do you think most people were hyped for when they announced Steam Workshop? :P

You think Sega knew what they were doing when they opened up the workshop for their genesis titles? How naive are you?

Sega thought they were provideing a way for people to ligimatly share their rom hacks of games they're selling on steam, not opening up an illegimate rom hosting site.
Fenril [FR] 44 25 Jul, 2016 @ 12:14pm
already what you are doing is stupid, I have contact SEGA and he told me that the SEGA games are banned and not legal. I myself have any games from SEGA, I am writing to CAPCOM for approval to their games. On the other hand some titles I consider legal as developer long gone. Think a bit before starting to put all the modders illegally! SEGA has no interest in securities that are not of them.
You talk using an emulator MAME etc ... that is not legal
before playing the police information that you would be intelligent action

First, invest in a better translation program.
Second, Why would Capcom give you permission to upload their full games for free when they can sell them again on various download platforms?
Third. The modders who are making actual mods arn't the problem. Just those who are pirating by uploading stuff like Konami's games.

If you want me to shut up about this, then help get these games removed of you'll just get more of this.
