tweaking ships

I'm trying to find out where to go to tweak the ship stats on some of the vanilla ships. (specifically to alter cargo hold space and flight speed). I know there are some mods out there, but I want to tinker with the values personally. Thanks!

1) make your mod folder (and .sgs file)
2) extract "backupships.zip" (located in spg2/models) into your mod folder
3) edit the .shp files inside each ship folder
4) run the modmanager to create the .sgm mod file.
