Managing Mods: Steam Workshop vs. Nexus
So ..

I am gradually becoming more comfortable installing and troubleshooting mods. I find myself drifting towards using Nexus [www.nexusmods.com] download directly rather than subscribing to Steam Workshop. No real issues against Steam. Just trying to minimize variables.

One advantage of Steam: it seems that I have to actively track, download and install Nexus mods. Nexus don't update automatically, AFAIK.

One advantage of Nexus: it has a much more complete inventory than Steam Workshop.

Other thoughts?

What am I missing?

You're fine to mix/match. Steam usually gets updated first since there's a button in the editor to publish directly to workshop, but modders have to go package stuff up and update nexus manually.

Steam auto-updates...most of the time, but sometimes you have to unsub-resub to trigger an update.

There's really not a reason to feel forced to use just one. I find it a bit easier to keep the main mods I use up to date on steam, then go grab stuff on nexus that isn't on workshop.

Thanks for your reply! I appreciate it.

Do Steam / Nexus download their files to different folders? I.e., if I install a Nexus mod and then later subscribe to the same mod on Steam, will Steam override the Nexus mod or should I delete the Nexus mod folder in the mod directory?

It's different folders. You put nexus mods in the manual install folder (link in the mods menu in game to open it/create it). Steam puts them somewhere else. You can have the same mod installed from both, it'll just show a workshop icon next to the ones from steam and nothing next to the nexus ones.

There's a lot that I want to say about the wider idea of doing your own thinking for yourself rather than using automated tools to do things you couldn't do on your own. You seem to have some of the curiosity and enthusiasm to want to start digging and learning how things work, and I wanted to give you a thumbs up and encourage that. :cozyspaceengineersc:

My friend is playing from Epic and needs a couple of the interface mods that are on Steam... if I copy the files can he just drop them into the local/mech5/mods folder or whatever it is?

Yes.

Hiya, dumbo moment in coming, do the .pak files need to be in individual folders? They weren't showing up for my friend after I sent them despite being in the correct folder.

Mods need their whole folder and contents, not just the .pak.

This has "How do I install Spawn copies of Starcraft for my friend's LAN party?" back in middle school vibes.
