Why do I need to 'subscribe' before downloading a mod?

So far as I'm aware it works the same for all games on Steam. It allows Steam to automatically update your copy of the mod if or when it gets updated in the workshop. Not so important for DoM, but very useful for games being regularly updated & constantly breaking their mods.
