But you all suck at making maps. I have yet to find a map on the workshop that doesn't have some major fault. I am not going to commit to tens, if not hundreds of hours on a poorly made map. Common issues: Excessively flat. Excessively hilly. Unbalanced resources. Massive drop off across the entire coast. Addition of buildings outside of common starter buildings on populated maps. Tall mountains that start at a flat plain and go straight up. Mountains that gradually slope all the way down, resulting in a large amount of unusable sloped land. It looks like half of the time people are just basing it on a topography map.

Take a look at the Slovakia map. It shows how to tastefully do flat and mountainous terrain without making it look excessive while still giving the player lots of space to work with. Resources are spaced apart so that the player has to plan a more complex logistics system rather than just having everything in one place. The only downside of the Slovakia map is that it is based on Slovakia so you have a general lack of access to water making sewage management more difficult and there is no real shipping ability.

Workshop maps are free stuff.
Map editor has its limitations. Topographic data is a pain to get right to fit in the game.
If you are disatisfied you can always try it for yourself with your concept of map in mind.
One thing many people complain is resources but it can be fixed to your liking in instants.

I will just say that as someone who is trying to make a map, making a good looking map is hard and takes a lot of time. Making it challenging or at least interesting to play is also challenging. Finding both of those in a map demands that the map maker have both a lot of knowledge about the game mechanics and also cares enough to make maps well (and learn the obtuse map making tools), so interesting and good looking maps tend to be uncommon.

You're pretty on point with resource availability though (most maps have way too much), but I would add that building space should also counted as a limited resource:
  • Players should choose between polluting an area to get resources or build an industrial area, or to keep it "pristine" for residential usage, tourism, or for sourcing high quality water.

  • Limiting the amount of large flat spaces forces players to utilize less optimal spaces, like long coastlines, valleys, ridges, small island clusters, etc., which forces them away from the boring blob walking cities everyone uses. It also encourages building more densely, which means designing more interesting cities around transportation like metros or passenger trains, and concentrating industry to preserve unpolluted land.

  • Some terrain, like rivers or somewhat steep mountains, can be used to limit how quickly and easily players can expand. Bridges and tunnels are kryptonite to railway expansions and in general are pretty expensive to build compared to regular roads or tracks.

  • Hills and mountains encourage more vertical building and discourage the player from just using trains everywhere.

The thing is, when you make a map with interesting challenging resources, people will cry everyday on the comments for you to add more resources. Its best to overdo the resources and anyone that wants challenge should be smart enought to press C+H+E and delete some before playing.

I think the problem is in advertising. You should state that the map is a challenge so that plebs are filtered by the thought of being challenged.

By the way OP, here are some map recommendations.

A large map (30 km by 30 km) that looks beautiful and offers a very good challenge.
(Lex713, the map maker, also has an 18x18 map and even a 60km by 60 km map.)

A nice island map that challenges your ability to manage building space. There isn't much flat land and extracting from most resource deposits will make most of it unsuitable for residences, tourism, or sourcing water.

A lovely looking mountainous map with some nice post glacial mountain ranges. This one is challenging to build transportation for due to the severe changes in elevation.

This map has a large water channel cutting it in half and is much more restrained in resource availability. You can bridge to the other side, but you will have to build a tall bridge so shipping is not blocked.

This one looks good and doesn't splurge on resource availability. While it isn't too difficult, it does have some interesting features to build around.

This is a nice list. I use Confluence a lot; will have to check out the others.

Thanks for turning a moan thread (no offence rofl) into a quite constructive and useful one, Silent_shadow. Interesting maps, some of which I'll definitely check out
